I work customer service for a pretty Republican retailer (yeah, I know...job market is tight)
He wanted to exchange a gift card for cash and I explained that it wasn't going to happen as per the refund policy. "Well," he says, "I guess that's $20 of mine I just wasted at <company name>."
Turns out he's peeved that like every retailer, the phrase du année is "happy holidays" instead of "merry christmas". "But 'happy holidays' is inclusive of christmas, Sir," I retorted. According to him hanukkah and kwaanza aren't national holidays, and he set about a long sequence of questioning me, "Do you get off work for christmas?" (<snrrk> barely!) "Yes." "Do you get off for hanukkah?" "I have friends that do!" I wish I'd have thought to throw in ramadan, but I probably would have gotten dinged for being combative.
Would I go to hell if next time this happens I lie and tell the caller I am Jewish and I do get days off for the holiday?
