OUTFOXING FOX PRIZE -- Jack Cafferty, CNN
From FAIR's PU-litzer prizes of 2004

As co-anchor of CNN's morning program, Cafferty had something to report on March 31: "It's a red-letter day here in America," he said. "Air America, that communist radio network, starts broadcasting in a little while." Cafferty was unyielding when CNN colleague Soledad O'Brien responded by saying that the new talk-radio network was not communist but liberal. He replied: "Well. Aren't they synonymous?"

Thank god we have the liberal media on our side.

1. The few mornings I brave their show I've noticed that
Soledad has a tendency to wince every once in awhile when Cafferty opens his mouth. It's kind of an amusing game to try to predict which gem is going to generate her grimace.

5. he's said some vile things
borderline misogyny, and vulgar for daytime. I don't know how she can stand being genial with that asshole.

12. I've seen that
and it's phony as can be. The schtick seems to be that Cafferty is the grumpy older patriarch (think: Crankshaft, from the funny pages) who doesn't bother being PC but just "calls em as he sees em" while Soledad is usually amused by his mild ranting and only occasionally embarassed. He is supposed to represent the voice of a bygone age, when men were men and women were, well, whatever their husbands told them to be.

The whole thing is about as phony as it can get, and has about as much to do with reporting actual news as a Bugs Bunny cartoon. It is the TV equivalent of the "morning zoo" type radio programs so popular on the radio these days. Meanwhile, a willing American public gobbles it all up, believing that it is meaningful reporting. It is disgusting, distressing, depressing, and it makes me want to scream.

Happy Holidays!

15. I don't know.
I know someone who was acquainted with her at NBC who says he can easily see her being legitimately queasy at Cafferty's quips. I'll agree the amused bit is phoney, but the embarrassed moments seem genuine. I think they happen when she just can't gain control over the amused personna.

3. Cafferty is a Neanderthal. He was one when he was doing local NYC news
and he is one now. He is the ultimate broadcast news caveman. Its a wonder he knows to shave each day.

What a mouth breathing, knuckle walker.

17. I figured they got Cafferty because Andy Rooney was already taken.
They probably figured some old cranky nonPC guy would juice up the ratings by appealing to the right and outraging the left &/or vice versa on occasion.

Kind of like the very old Today Show when they actually had a real chimp on the show.

I rarely watch CNN at all anymore since they became Fox Lite, which is actually more deceptive in a way than Fox itself.

21. I'm an old cranky, non PC curmudgeonly asshole
I hate everybody, but my heart's in the right place and I'm usually on the left side of issues.

Hire me! I can be an even bigger jerk than Cafferty!

But I'd be a lovable jerk.

25. Sounds great except for that left leaning thing. If you weren't
such a "commie" you'd probably have a shot at being Wolfie's sidekick. ;)

Hey what a thought...that could be cool. Wolfie could pretentiously bloviate and a misanthropic sidekick could insult him. Yeah, I'd watch that. }(

6. He is the worst.
Watching CNN is bad enough as it is, but Cafferty completely ruined it for me. He is the biggest jerk on Cable news, IMHO.

I haven't watched CNN since election night, and it's the best decision I've made in a long time. They have completely gone over to the dark side.

14. CNN is the most devious of the bunch.
Theyre sneaky-GOP. So many average Americans fall for it, including some of my semi-liberal friends. Very few true liberals, though, can stand them either.

8. Bush residency really outs 'em
It's really amazing how Bush's residency has shone a harsh light on those in American "journalism" who are the Kool-Aid drinkers and those who are not. I now can't even remember the days when I thought the likes of Cafferty and O'Reilly actually bearable.

11. Would that be "Hell on Wheels" Cafferty?
The one known for hit-and-run accidents with his Cadillac?

CNN anchor pleads guilty to hit and run The morning anchor for CNN, Jack Cafferty, has pleaded
guilty to knocking a cyclist from his bike in New York on May 14 this year. The accident happened on
Ninth Avenue when Cafferty turned suddenly in front of Billy Maldonado, who was thrown to the ground
as a result. Cafferty continued driving, dragging Maldonado's bicycle under his vehicle and running
two red lights, according to the criminal complaint. Maldonado required an operation on his right
elbow as a result of the injuries he sustained.

Cafferty was charged with leaving the scene of an accident, reckless driving, assault and
harassment. However he got off lightly, pleading guilty to "operating a motor vehicle knowing or
having cause to know property damage had been caused." Cafferty's penalty was a $250 fine and 70
hours of community service. His lawyer said, "Jack acted responsibly in this, as he always has."
