What do you think about a international minimum wage as part of trade agre
ements? Maybe there should also be international unions for like huge companies like say microsoft.

I think stuff like that could really help with things like outscoring because that would help make fair labor standards

1. This was part of Gephardt's platform.
I thought it was a great idea.

4. Dean's too.
Agreed. Good idea, as long as it's indexed to cost of living.

9. If my Big Maconomics is right..
"Agreed. Good idea, as long as it's indexed to cost of living."

.. isn't wage levels different because of different cost of living in the first place?

11. Technically yes, in reality no...
Many of the people that are stuck in these factories make barely enough to pay for one meal a day for themselves, in their own country, much less anywhere else. So while a worker in Mexico is more expensive than one in Ghana, in both situations they are not being paid living wages.

2. Sounds like a great idea to me.
Though international unions may be hard to achieve. Don't know anything about them.

3. Let's solve more important problems first. Ban Nukes & Global Warming!
Edited on Fri Dec-24-04 09:13 PM by TwentyFive
Enforcing international laws is difficult to impossible. Until we can keep nukes away from dictators & agree on solving a clear problem like global warming....I think economic issues should take a back seat. They are much more difficult to enforce, and impossible to agree on.

I think it sounds noble, but we should look to making the world nuke free and save what little is left of the envionment first.

10. Salute!
Lotsa props to what you said up there.

Because of the media whores, almost no one is representing the environment these days.

Although it could be argued that environmental awareness will rise in proportion to economic prosperity just like it does in certain European countries, two things make me doubt this:

1. USA's irresponsible first world gluttony.
2. China going through Europe's Industrial Revolution phase, but at quadruple the amount of resources, pollution, and fuel.

5. That may be one solution but it would have to be modified
One thing is for sure: Ultra-Capitalists got tired of having to treat their workers correctly in this country and now are exploiting the world's poor, so we have to find some way to protect them, not only to save our own jobs in the USA, but to save others from the suffering hardships that Americans fought against over 100 years ago--child labor, etc.

Very tragic how Capitalists will prey upon people relentlessly unless regulated. Kind of makes one wonder about folks who insist "people are naturally good"--does that apply to the ultra-rich Fascists? (note: I'm not against a market economy, only unregulated free-fall Ultra-Capitalism/Fascism)

6. Doesn't have a snowball's prayer in hell
Who do you think negotiates these damn trade agreements? It's the corporate lawyers for the CEOs who bought the politicians.

8. An Aw some Idea, something the IWW would support.
International Organization should be easier than some in this thread have indicated, due mainly to technologies like the Internet.

Presupposes a minimum standard of living however.
