My mother sent my kids a book written by Lynne Cheney for the Holidays!

I called her and said "MOM, WTF? YOU bought a book written by that bitch Lynne Cheney?"

She tells me "It's about George Washington, it's history"

I tell her "I don't give a shit, that book IS NOT staying in MY HOUSE, I'll buy the kids an Al Franken book. That Cheney family is scum of the earth and I will never allow anything written by them in my home."

Funny thing is she hates Bushie and Cheney more than me!

harkens back to a dark day in human history which I'd just assume not repeat. Someone else had a good suggestion......don't like it?

11. Burning Books?
No matter how distasteful I'd never BURN a book. You could however, give it a good Christian burial.

I guess Mom had a bit of a brain fart, eh? At least she isn't a Bushie.

My mother in law gave my 7 year old (at the time) son a floral needlepoint eyeglass kit. He doesn't wear glasses. She told him he could do the needlepoint and then when he does wear glasses, carry them to school in a flowery needlepoint case. I guess she wanted him to get the crap kicked out of him or something. So weird. She also gave my daughter stationery to use to write to her from camp. Unfortunately it was the same stationery we had given my mother in law the year before to use to write to my daughter at camp!

23. Yes, It is politcal
Cheney and her cronies have made a complete re-working of history taught to our children a major goal. Their "history" deletes any suggestion that anything done by white Americans was in any way wrong. Think of "Fox News" as a blueprint for a history lesson, and that's what Cheney and her foundation are doing.

and yet she bought When Washington Crossed the Delaware: A Wintertime Story for Young Patriots, by Lynne Cheney? What was she thinking?

Hopefully not the same thing my mom was thinking when she sent my son Way to Be! by Gordon B. Hinckley. I used it to steady a tipsy plant.

24. Sorry, but there are much better books.
Edited on Sat Dec-25-04 04:52 PM by lolly
There are plenty of good history books for children that don't promote wingnut ideology at the expense of a balanced examination of history.

Look around at online booksellers or in libraries.

I would no more give my child a book by a wingnut--even it it was about flower arrangement--than I would give him a book by Adolph Hitler--even if IT was about flower arranging. Yes, I'm serious.

And, as I said early, Cheney's foray into history is not innocent and it's NOT without ideological content. Read a little more on her and her campaign to purge all non-wingnut historians from college campuses and eliminate non-ideologically correct viewpoints from the teaching of history at all levels.

Try to get your mother's money back on this one. Don't feed the Republican machine.

26. I don't think so.
I'm not saying that the book is poorly written or doesn't offer historical information of interest. But, for god sakes, Lynn Cheney wrote it. The woman that proclaimed John Kerry was (paraphrasing) "s a bad, bad man." Yeah and your husband is a model of statesmanship (Fuck who, Dick? "
In any case a line has to be drawn somewhere and this seems to be a good place to start. But, in the words of Dennis Miller, "Hey that's just my opinion, I might be wrong.";-)

32. Don't burn it but take it out of circulation
Maybe put it in a red "bio-hazards" bag, with a note explaining the dangers of Cheney and a right wing perspective on history. Also include a note of your feelings toward your mother for sending your kids the book. Sort of a time capsule of what not to do.

Hide it away in an attic/basement... or trash it.

I can't abide burning a book....not even one by Lynne Cheney.

Don't let her get any royalties off of it.

It isn't just a matter of not having it in your house...heck, I occassionally read books by Conservatives to motivate me, and challenge my brain (sometimes it almost explodes) but I refuse to give these people a penny of my money - I get it from the library.
