Why people vote Republican
http://www.americanrhetoric.com/mp3clips/politicalspeeches/ronaldreaganatimeforchoosing.mp3

People - lots of people - loved this guy. Conservatism, however much people here may disagree with it, makes sense to many. Bush voters still have hope that our current president can achieve what Reagan set out in this speech. Many conservatives believe what Jefferson said - government is a corrupting force, and power is best left in the hands of the people.

My point: don't hate Republicans. They're not brainwashed morons. Just disagree with them, and maybe even convince them that Bush is no conservative. I think this is the best way to help Bush lose support.

1. It's more then that...
These people are ok with thousands of people dying so long as it doesn't interfere with their dinner...If your different from them you mean nothing.

2. Respectfully disagree
Many Americans honestly agree that peace is a long road, often through war. Listen to the last 5 minutes of the speech and you'll understand what they think.

As wrong as they may be, Republicans think that what's going on in Iraq is the right thing, and that the world will become a better place because of it.

4. disagree

too many Americans think "supporting the troops" means wrapping themselves in the flag and sporting a stupid sticker on their car (you can bet these assholes either don't vote or vote republican). They don't really care and the corporate media is not bending over backwards to make them understand why this piece of shit war was a disaster since it was thought up by Bush Inc WELL BEFORE 9/11.

7. Also disagree
"Many Americans" think that the U.S. is allowed to do whatever it wants because it's Big and Bad. Most republicans think the U.S. should stay on top at any cost to other nations.

6. Most are just programmed by their parents, I think,
and just have never really questioned what they were taught. And the line about fiscal responsibility and limited government DOES make sense, if you don't notice it's become a total crock. Even the line about personal responsibility makes sense if you don't think too hard.

11. And how exactly do we convince them Bush *isn't* conservative?
The evidence is all out there in plain sight and they don't care!

- Record deficit spending
- Biggest increase in non-defense government spending in decades
- Bigger government, less individual liberty (Homeland Security, PATRIOT Act, Total Information Awareness)

Sorry, but conservatives themselves have to be stupid if they still think Bush is conservative. No amount of "convincing" is going to get through their thick skulls.

12. Actually Conservatism is about leaving Power in the hands of the few.
Mostly Corporations which even T. Jefferson wanted to control with an 11th Amendment.

"Many conservatives believe what Jefferson said - government is a corrupting force, and power is best left in the hands of the people."

Sadly that's a un-attainable utopia. Except for the Walton Family.

16. Your point is part of the problem. They ARE
brainwashed morons with black hearts and deserve nothing but our hatred.

You don't just disagree with them, you attack and make them feel like the idiots they really are.

And always act amazed that they would admit to being a repug because it's a sure sign of stupidity.

17. They have a delusional view that they're voting for conservatism.
Most, if not all, of these people are simply afraid of change. They don't like change, they're deathly afraid of it and they think that by voting Republican that they are staving off that change.

Republicans in power have done a great job at convincing people that change is inherently evil and that there used to be some great golden era that we have long since past. They tell these unassuming conservative voters that they can bring them back to this wonderful non-existent time. All they offer is a mere fantasy and so many people believe what they say that they are blinded to obvious facts.

Republicans in power have made it their sole strategy to confuse the American public, and have done a pretty good job at it too.

I think Michael Douglas said it best in "The American President,"

-"People don't drink the sand because they're thirsty. They drink the sand because they don't know the difference."
