1. Mixed blessing at best
It can mean the person went through a personal revolution of ideology, or it can simply mean he's the same ideologically but that he's dissatisfied with the Republican leadership and has joined the Dems, which will just help to muddle the Democrat message further as it comes under strain from more conservative elements vs. more progressive ones.

3. I rest my case!
As for me, though I've never voted Republican in my life (strong union ties), I am a former conservative. My time in the military cured me of that particular affliction!

5. My mom ran into one last week....
He'd been a customer in her shop for 14 years ranting on and on about liberals. Well, he now thinks * has screwed over the whole country and anyone who voted for him is in idiot! My mom was loving it - but she still doesn't let on her political views. I don't know how she does it!

6. I was a republican
until Bush stole the election from Gore. At first I held onto my conservative ideology and just hated Bush, but gradually my eyes were opened to the wonders of liberalism. I changed my registration to Democratic in January of 2003 and have never looked back since.

7. If lots more former Republicans do not step forward denouncing
the Republican agenda almost in its entirety, our land might well soon be known as a former Republic.

I left when the moderates lost hold of the party and the right-wingers took over.

12. I just met my new neighbor--a former Republican.
Serving as a green beret during the first Gulf War cured him for good.
