Hey, let's create fake outrage over Valentine's Day
They're taking the martyrdom out of the holiday with those silly boxes of chocolate. Valentinus had far more serious things in mind.

From the History Channel website:

...One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men -- his crop of potential soldiers. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death...

So, Valentinus married folks whose unions were banned by the government. I'm pretty sure he would have married gay couples, who are currently banned from marrying. Not allowing gays to marry is supressing our expression of our holiday.

Think Bill O'Liely will take up the cause?

3. A bunch of us single gals used to go out on 2/13
and tear up the place..

One year, we all brought Ken dolls with us - I had "Perfect Date Ken". He wears a tux and comes with his own brush.

We also had Malibu Ken (or Surfer Ken - or something) and we had him go swimming in our water glasses....

It got out of hand.. a little.

;-)

For someone who has been single almost always since my divorce - Valentine's Day SUCKS.

OK - got that outta my system.

And, yes, this would be funny! :)

11. You need to learn to roll with it a little.
Get a bunch of your single friends together and have an Anti-Valentine's Day BASH!

19. I can do that part.
Can I also take the day off work and still find my classroom in the same orderly condition I left it in?

I cannot bear spending the day trying to teach 32 10-year-olds whose only focus is on how much candy they can eat, how to start "early," passing out cheap commercially produced, logo-stamped cards that no one bothers to read or look at, and half don't address or sign, so that they can gloat about how many they got or cry about how many they didn't.

The only thing worse is to turn them loose with a sub for the day. Then I'll REALLY pay.

23. But isn't how much candy you get
the whole reason behind Valentine's Day?

LOL, I'm sure you know I'm kidding.

But, yup, you gotta train them early that how many friends (and how many toys, and how big the toys are, and if they have a boyfriend or girlfriend, etc) is what determines their self-worth...

I don't know how I escaped with my self-esteem intact.

24. I htought the whole reason behind
Valentine's Day is to see who got the most cards.

No?

27. No, you give cards so that you have something
(like, say, an envelope) to put the candy in. :) Also, that way the other kids know that you're the one who gave the really good candy.

Which is also the day of the Tennessee/Alabama rivalry in college football and, thus, gets greatly overlooked me moi.

10. Cupid was definitely a sadistic
sob. The things this effeminate did with arrows is disgusting. No decent right wing could possibly consider endorsing this travesty.

The thought that Hallmark backs such a travesty is disgusting. Ccostco has excellent Valentine gifts.

12. Valentine's day is unpatriotic
We should make war not love.

Claudius was right - fighting for the empire is much more important than procreation. If we all followed St. Valentine's lead, who would be left to protect our oil^h^h^h freedom?

St. Valentine is pro-terrorist. Pass it on!

14. A pagan holiday if there ever was one
If the media were really as liberal as they say, we should have no trouble raising a big "republicans are killing valentine's day" ruckus, which would suit me fine.

and without war, how could we possibly defend ourselves from terrorists? LOL this is so crazy, we should expect to see it in the "news" in a couple of months.

17. It's a big leap to assert that St. Valentine would have

married gay couples just because he married young men to their fiancees in defiance of Claudius's order against young men being allowed to marry.

Definitely boycott Hallmark (GOP donor), and Valentine's Day in general if you like, but don't engage in historical revisionism.

18. I'm making fun of the notion that banning christmas trees
is somehow anti-christian, when almost all of the American icons of Christmas are pagan symbols.

Who the heck even knows if Valentinus actually existed? A good number of early saints were local gods whom the Christians called saints to pacify the local population.

22. Actually...
Until about the 13th century, it was not uncommon for priests to marry gay men and lesbians. There are still remote parts of Romania that still do it. Check out John (?) Boswell's book.

I'm already seeing some murmurings of the pending Easter wars, concerning the movie awards that may or may not be given to Mel Gibson's Jesus Chainsaw Massacre.
