The tsunami disaster as reported by FOX
I already created this thread once, but somebody suggested I give it a different, more descriptive title, add a couple of the comic graphics, and post it again.

The rest of it can be found here: http://www.udargo.com/burton/Tsunami/

6. You know...
I never watch them or anybody else, but I happened to catch a few minutes of their coverage of the disaster earlier in the week while I was at the gym. That inspired this little satire.

What was funny is that the U.N. representative said"all" rich countries and the republicans true to nature only thought of themselves. They are the biggest whiners I have ever seen and everything centers around themselves. What is really funny is Sweden has pledged twice as much as us and England 3 times as much

The guy never mentioned the US specifically, did he? And he was responding to a question about assistance in general.

But he sure hit a nerve with the Republicans. Hm.

21. I know...
I love that movie. Jefferson is one of the key characters in these strips because I can get so many good screenshots of him with so many different expressions and emotions on his face from the fillibuster scenes. It's good because he has the same suit and hairstyle the whole time, so I can usually find something I need and match it with other shots. Of course, sometimes I need to comb his hair and give him a shave...

Kudos for recognizing him, but does anybody know where Burton is from? Another great film, but not as well known.

In fact, you may be right, he may not be Russian. I hadn't really considered that. But he speaks Russian, and he appears to live in Russia.

But I guess the clue would be that he was in a Russian film. A Russian film from the Soviet era.

55. Ok, I never tell people
...for some reason. Perverse pleasure at their frustration, I guess. But I owe you and I was just asking a guy where the name "Agador Spartacus" came from because it was driving me crazy, so I'll just tell you. Burton is a character from the wonderful 1972 Tarkovsky film "Solaris." It was recently re-made as an American film starring George Clooney, but the original is very different. Burton does not appear in the remake, but he plays a prominent role in the first act of the Tarkovsky version.

If you've never seen any Soviet era films, I highly recommend anything by Tarkovsky. They're art films and require some patience and effort, but they pay off big if you can get into them.

So Burton's just this freaked out astronaut from "Solaris." The actor who played him had very large eyes, but I used Photoshop to make them even a litte bigger. I wanted his eyes to be as big as mine.

However, I must issue a correction here: a tsunami is NOT a tidal wave.

They are two different phenomena.

29. Here tis. Tsumanis...
Tsunami comes from the Japanese tsu (harbor) and nami (wave). Appropriate naming, as some 80 percent of all tsunamis occur in the Pacific Ocean and Japan has suffered many, some coming from as far away as South America. Tsunamis are often incorrectly called tidal waves, but tides have nothing to do with them (though the damage may be worse if a tsunami hits at high tide).

A tsunami (pronounced tsoo-nah-mee) is a wave train, or series of waves, generated in a body of water by an impulsive disturbance that vertically displaces the water column. Earthquakes, landslides, volcanic eruptions, explosions, and even the impact of cosmic bodies, such as meteorites, can generate tsunamis. Tsunamis can savagely attack coastlines, causing devastating property damage and loss of life.

Tsunamis are unlike wind-generated waves, which many of us may have observed on a local lake or at a coastal beach, in that they are characterized as shallow-water waves, with long periods and wave lengths. The wind-generated swell one sees at a California beach, for example, spawned by a storm out in the Pacific and rhythmically rolling in, one wave after another, might have a period of about 10 seconds and a wave length of 150 m. A tsunami, on the other hand, can have a wavelength in excess of 100 km and period on the order of one hour.

But...even though "tidal wave" is a misnomer, since it has nothing to do with tides, doesn't the term "tidal wave" refer to the same thing as a tsunami? Is there a different phenomenon to which "tidal wave" applies?

73. You're right about the tsunami/ tidal wave thing
But it's just the sort of sloppiness with the facts that you'd expect on Fox anyway. Tsunami sounds like a furriners word anyhoo so Fox would be suspicious of it.

The cartoon is brilliant. I got "OutFoxed" on DVD for Christmas and just watched it so I'm just in the mood for some clever Fox spoofing.

I'm forwarding now to my Fox-hating aussie friends.

39. CNN had a non-story on today as well
Edited on Thu Dec-30-04 11:01 PM by chookie
I think it was inadvertantly a non-story though.

A guy's son was missing, and his Dad, a doctor, was on CNN saying he was travelling to Thailand to look for him. CNN has been following the story breathlessly. I felt badly for him as I did for anyone seeking a lost loved one.

Turns out -- HAPPILY! -- that the kid was nowhere NEAR the tsunami. I am very happy for the family -- gosh, I prefer false alarms to sad stories any day!

Tucker Carlson said tonight that it was the most touching story he'd heard all week. What -- that the young man was nowhere near the tsunami? Like it's sp,e sort of miraculous story of courage and survival? Hey Tucker -- why don't you have ME on as a tsunami survivor, because I was in Pittsburgh when it struck??

Again, CNN couldn't have known that the young man was never NEAR the impacted areas, but for Tucker Carlson to be touched by this story -- well, he's a dick.

66. yeah, I saw that too
I thought the mother said that the son knew about his father travelling over since the previous night and was going to meet him with a CNN reporter, and my eyes popped out of my head, but it turned out the CNN reporter was with the father and the son somehow knew that but he nor the mother bothered to contact CNN to let them know until just after the dad phoned in. The bit of confusion prompted me to e-mail Anderson to question if the story was staged, and he ended up e-mailing me "fuck off" in response... I hit a really raw nerve with Coop.

70. CNN ran this celeb-worship BS for *real*
I remember watching it and thinking the exact same thing - news media going "Hey, famous white people died in this too! Let's do human interest!"

72. Yep..on Larry King Live tonight....on and on about the model..
Ok..I feel bad for that model who is now in the hospital <and her missing boyfriend> but with over 100,000 people dead and so many more missing, could they have spent a LITTLE LESS time of showing her modeling pictures??? Can they get amy MORE shallow?

81. Excellent stuff. Of course the REAL Fox News...
would suspend their coverage for a special episode of "Cashin' In" so they can talk about profiteering from the misery of others.

85. It's crazy
all the traffic I'm getting this morning for this thing. The BuzzFlash link is generating a lot of it, along with the TotalFark.com stuff (I wish you didn't have to pay to find out what that's all about). Lot of people are linking to it from blogs and forums. Somebody at the arianaonline forum linked to it and it didn't go over too well. Most over there apparently found it too dark or even tasteless. But most of the comments I can find are positive.

Thanks again!

89. Thanks. Burton? Burton is Burton, man.
He's probably Russian, although, as somebody pointed out, Burton isn't a Russian name. But he speaks Russian. He's just this freaked out astronaut guy.

92. Yep. He's a real guy.
He's also known as Vladislav Dvorzhetsky, which clearly IS a Russian name, so I guess he really is Russian after all.

I think the portraits behind him are of famous Soviet astronauts and scientists.
