Meet The Fockers - A Thoroughly BLUE STATE Flick - Is #1
http://channels.netscape.com/ns/news/story.jsp?id=2004123005180002000584&dt=20041230051800&w=RTR&coview=

'Fockers' set for 2nd weekend atop box office

Why isn't the media commenting on the fact that a movie, with a blue state/red state theme (with blue state morality kicking red state butt in the end), is number #1 at the box office two weekends in a row?

If this were some movie about Nascar racing or Jesus or a religious rightwing "message", and it hit #1, we would be hearing and reading endless crap about red state supremacy and red state "morality", etc.
and how this represents a sea change in American life.

But, a movie in which blue state morality triumphs sits comfortably atop the box office rankings... and the media is silent. You see, this doesn't jive with the current "red state morality rules" agenda they're pushing. At all.

The hypocrisy is deafening.

1. I haven't seen it yet...
without spoilers, please define "Blue State Flick". My day off is tommorow and I might just have to catch a matinee.

4. The subtext of it
is easily interpreted as a rather emotionally in touch Democratic, jewish family (Streisand and Hoffman) battle it out with a frigid, uptight, resentful Republican familiy (DeNiro and Danner).

The irony of this movie being #1 is also that every single cast member is a strong, activist liberal and most of them are thoroughly despised by Freepers and their ilk.

Yet, it's #1. So where's this big red state cultural backlash the media keeps yapping about.

2. Corporate movie studios
are making lots of money. It is not worth to overturn the apple cart in the holiday rush of money making.

22. "Meet the Parents" was so, so funny
Hilarious, can't wait to see the new one. And I think Ben Stiller is way overrated too.

5. But, but, but, my sister who voted for Bush said she liked it!
She sees a lot of movies. Now why would she like this movie if we blues are beating up on the reds?

Hmmmmmmmmmm, now I've got to go see this movie.

The only reason she votes for repugs is because she's been brainwashed by her husband. She wouldn't admit that, but I'm older and wiser and I know.

6. Question
Are the jokes pretty similiar to the ones in the first film? I have a friend who wants me to go see it with them and I have been debating it. I really didn't like the first one at all. Don't get me wrong it wasn't a bad movie the humor in the movie was centered around how much of an idiot or how embarrassed Stiller could get. That just isn't my cup of tea.

12. Saw it tonight and it's a hoot! I thought it was funnier than the first
one. And yes, it did hit me at the movies that it was Dem. vs Rep. And the Dem's win in the end (get them to think like them.) Real funny, everyone should see it. LOTS of laughter throughout the theater.

13. Probably because it's a dumb sequel
I mean, it may be amusing. I haven't seen it first but I enjoyed the first one...some. I just can't imagine that a sequel to a pedestrian movie has any kind of message worth exploring.

(As an aside, I miss the Deniro who wasn't a whore).

17. What are you talking about?
"Meet the Fockers" is advertised on a nearly non-stop basis here.

The progressive Jewish family wins; the entire cast are progressives: so what? Isn't your premise a bit of a stretch? Or, do you live in the Bible Belt or something?

18. Umm, i'm not discussing it's publicity level
I'm talking about the fact that not one pundit, not one cable show, not one critic has written anything about how this movie must represent a surge in blue state morality - I haven't seen one "pendulum must be swinging towards blue state culture" story.

If this werw a red state theme and it did the same box office it's doing, trust me, we would be inundated with stories about how it illustrated a red state surge in the culture.

In other words, there's a huge double standard.

20. Really?
Tell me about a couple of stories in the major media which talked about how this movie's popularity shows America is moving towards blue state morality and culture.

I'm all ears.

21. The entire cast maybe progressive
but the Character Robert DiNero plays would more than likely NOT be progressive. He's an ex-CIA man who loves his spy shit. He is heavy on his uptight repressive sexual ways. I would definitly see the Byrnes "archie bunker" type people. Mr Byrnes would no doubt be a freeper. His wife "maybe a closet progressive, but she could never tell her husband. Now the Fockers are just the opposite. They would no doubt be major progressives.
