Our neighborhood has been hit with high water four times this year.
In September, the rains from Hurricane Ivan had us cut off from the rest of the world, with no electricity for three days.
Are we ready... Lots of batteries, flashlights, Propane lanterns, Propane heater, spare propane, generator, gasoline for generator, canned food and water, 2 meter ham radio, GMRS 2 way radios, big coolers, rope, plastic sheeting, duct tape, first aid supplies, and a plan for most anything.
Ivan gave us the opportunity to fine tune our plans.
Our neighbors are great too, when we all were isolated, everyone pitched in to help and care for each other. We even had to rescue a elderly lady from her house after it was surrounded by the flood waters.
The biggest lesson we learned is with so much going on over a wide area not to expect much help from the "authorities" when a major disaster is happening.
By the way, when the water receded, the Red Cross was first on the scene with clean up supplies, hot food, and water. Those folks are great and deserve to be supported!!!
FEMA... what a waste, way too late, with way too little help.
