Survey Finds Underworked Employees Are Least Happy
Survey Finds Underworked Employees Are Least Happy

Those With More Work Are Happier, Says Survey

Contrary to what some people believe, employees who have too little work are actually less satisfied with their jobs than those who are burdened with too much work, according to a study by Sirota Consulting, specialists in attitude research.

The most satisfied employees of all in the survey were those who say they have just the right amount of work. They rated their overall satisfaction with their jobs at a 73 on a 100-point scale. Those with the second highest satisfaction were those who have "too much work".

The least satisfied employees were those who say they have "much too little work." They rated their job satisfaction only a 32 on a 100-point scale.

The study included over 800,000 employees at 61 organizations worldwide. 75% of these have operations in North America, 11% have operations in Europe, and 14% have operations in Asia.

2. I'll second that conclusion
At the same job, at different times, I had 3 people's worth of work to do, and then later, could spend 7 hours a day reading DU. Good for the post count, but does get old. I'd rather be busy!

3. I can partially agree with that.
The only thing worse than having no "real" work to do is getting saddled with "busy work"....

The day DRAGS when there's nothing on the workbench and you've swept the shop so much the paint's wearing off the floor.

4. It took a survey? We should start a thread about
how many people are happy with their jobs vs. those that aren't as opposed to their respective salaries and jobs. I bet it would be eye-opening.
But, Straight Story, thanks for drawing attention to this. Something else for all of us to think about. Tonight. Maybe.

5. I would sure like to test this out for myself.
Reminds me of the three bears: Too little, too much, jussst right.
Don't think I've ever experienced anything but too much.

6. I'll go along with this.
One of the main factors in my decision to retire early was the job wasn't challenging any more.

7. They obviously didn't survey any Railroaders
We didn't mind the work, but we had to have time to play cards, drink, and have a bar-b-Q.

8. When I have too little work...
I start worrying about my job security. That is the major stress - the other stress issues in that particular situation is my questioning of my value to my employers.
Of course, I generally only have "too little work" in short spurts.
