Has Kofi Anaan spoken about the tsunami?
I heard a news report that he's been on vacation in Jackson Hole, Wyoming on a ski trip. Is this accurate? Has he released a statement or given an interview re: the tsunami victims?

1. Yes
I saw him on the news yesterday giving a press conference about it. It appeared to be at the UN, but I wouldn't swear to it.

5. Why?
Edited on Fri Dec-31-04 10:20 AM by OnlyInAmerica
Because he's head of the UN and I assume he would let the world know how the relief effort is progressing. He should be the point man on this disaster.

on edit: Plus, I didn't watch the news yesterday and there's no mention of it on Yahoo.com or CNN.com

9. Fine, just be aware that Anaan is a current RW talking point, so that
post made my Freekdar hit the ceiling.

Apparently from the replies to your post he's been all over it.

15. They get a two-fer with Kofi Annan.
Edited on Fri Dec-31-04 10:40 AM by Judi Lynn
Not only do they get to rave against the U.N., they also get to take part in some pot shots at a black man.

ASSHOLES. Pathetic scum.

Apparently they imagine the U.S. right-wing should control the entire planet with no chance for other nations to arbitrate or communicate.

19. Yep; I work with an incredibly stupid freep-type. Yesterday she
railed on about how the US gave more aid than the entire UN. :eyes:

When I say stupid, I mean STUPID. Two of us set her straight on that one.

Carried live on most cable networks worldwide, except of course, in the United States.

6. He has not only spoken out - he broke off his vacation at once
to return and organize the international help. That's his job and he's doing it very well.

The lies the US-citizens are being fed by their media these days I find truly amazing. Since with the Internet there are so many other news sources available I wonder why anybody still listens to US-media.

11. I am damn embarrassed. Remember when the US led the world?
In compassion, in logistics, in brotherhood?

When our government's actions were representative of the hearts and minds of her people?

I do, and I'm wondering what country I live in now.

We were watching ABC NEWS and she saw that recap (basically) of the US response. She wept at what we have become.

20. They listen because our corporate whore media tells them what they want
to hear.

Without a free press (a quaint relic of the past in the US, I'm afraid), our democracy will die.

This thread is a reflection of what we are up against.

Rumors as news stories.

He is one leader who speaks from the heart. Bush should have taken lessons.

10. Why don't you ask about Bush & Blair?
Because they don't care about people and Annan does? How are their vacations going? They really are the scum of the earth.

Kofi Annan, Dr. Manmohan Singh reassure maximum support

UN Secretary General Kofi Annan was in touch with President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga on Tuesday night to express his deepest condolences and maximum support for the continuing relief work and rescue operations in the tsunami devastated areas in the country's coastal belt.

President Kumaratunga thanked the UN Secretary General for the ongoing disaster assessment work supported by the UN and the concern shown by the international community and their support since the urgent call by the State for assistance on Sunday.
