by Ernest Callenbach. Written in 1981. He nailed this society that we find ourselves in now. Corrupt government bought off by the media and corporate non-care of the 'consumers'. The 'Survivalists' are the real heros of this visionary novel. There are societies devoted to following in the 'fictional' models presented. <snip> Welcome to the Ecotopian Society community page.
The Ecotopian Society is an environmental and progressive philosophical and political network. It is dedicated to preserving and protecting the environment and our national heritage. Ecotopian political philosophy is a combination of Environmentalism, Jeffersonianism and Progressivism. Ecotopians were Democrats but first the Democratic National Committee sold out to the rich, big business and corporate America and then some of our most trusted elected Democratic leadership abandoned us. We now strive to create and build a new political party, the Ecotopian Party that will truly protect the environment and represent the people. We also strive to create a system of historical and natural areas that would be managed and operated by Ecotopian Rangers of the Ecotopian Heritage, Parks and Wildlife Service.
The source of the name Ecotopian is Greek. Eco comes from the Greek oikos that means household or home and topia comes from the Greek topos that means place. Ecotopian is a modern term for someone that is an environmentalist and politically progressive. Education, the environment, our heritage, and social justice are the main concerns or issues for an Ecotopian. We are also fiscal conservatives.
Ecotopia is also a name given to the American region that includes Northern California, Oregon, Washington, northern Idaho, British Columbia, and the Alaska panhandle. This name was originally given to this region by environmental author Ernest Callenbach. He is the author of Ecotopia: The Novel of Your Future, Ecotopia Emerging, Ecology: A Pocket Guide, and Bring Back the Buffalo! A Sustainable Future for America's Great Plains. These novels are about the people of this region breaking away and creating their own independent republic called the Republic of Ecotopia. Joel Garreau also used "Ecotopia" to identify one of his "nations," this same region, in his book The Nine Nations of North America. I believe that there are 14 rather than nine nations within Anglo-America (Canada, U.S., including commonwealths and territories, Bahamas, Jamaica, etc.).
Ecotopian political philosophy is a combination of Environmentalism, Jeffersonianism and Progressivism.
The major concern of Ecotopians is preserving and protecting the environment and our national heritage. We also believe in standing up to the radical right and corporate America, ensuring quality education, fighting for social justice, promoting equal rights for all Americans, national health care, a viable American rail passenger system, keeping religion out of government, politics and the public, proportional representation, the right for labor to organize, and population control. In addition we believe the 14 regional nations of America should be recognized as semi-autonomous republics. In foreign affairs, we advocate an independent Republic of Scotland within the European Union, an independent Republic of Kashmir and a Palestinian Republic of the Sinai rather than an independent Palestinian state that includes the Gaza Strip and West Bank.
Another goal of The Ecotopian Society is the creation of a system of historical and natural areas that would be managed and operated by Ecotopian Rangers of the Ecotopian Heritage, Parks and Wildlife Service. This would include battlefields, forest preserves, heritage preserves historic parks, historic sites, lakeshores or seashores, nature preserves, parks, wildlife preserves, and wildlife refuges. This would be nationally and internationally.
