I'm not kidding. I have stayed away from cable shows for over a year now but i was shocked at this topic, i lasted 5 minsutes before i thought my head was going to explode.

Here is what I learned, and I will try to offend everyone equally in what I repeat.

From the Imam: the tsunami can either be punishment or martyrdom. It's martyrdom for kids because they are innocent and will be rewarded, as will be the folks for whom this was meant as martyrdom. The way you can tell is the way they died. If the roof falls in on top of them, that is a sign of martyrdom, and not punishment.

From the rabbi: (Hassidic?) God controls everything. Nothing happens on the earth except for it's purpose for people of the Jewish faith. This is a sign of the relevations (I don't know they Torah, but the man actually said this), the signs started coming in 1991 with the gulf war, he was saying alot of yiddish words, so I may get some of it mixed up. But God causes every single thing that happens and causes it only for the Jews, what happens to other people is collateral damage. Even if a man cuts his finger just a little bit, God caused that to happen.

These types of incidences have been happening through the earth's history. Even if an event occurred like this Tsunami happened a few hundred years ago we probably would not even know about it.

With the advent of the powerful media outlets that we now have the world can witness catastrophes that they would have never known about in years gone by. Now that we can actually see these things there are all sorts of cries about God's wrath and the end of the world.

This Tsunami has gotten me thinking about the Lost City of Atlantis though. Maybe that is what happened to it.

Looking at the frequency of Tsunami in the Pacific region, I have a feeling these events are more frequent than people think. As you say, we really do not have adequate lengths of record to adequately assess the risk posed by these extreme events.

Let's say that the last big tsunami happened back in great great granddad's day, or 100 years ago, the history of which was passed on from generation to generation.

On first impression, one may think that tsunami is so infrequent that it is not really a concern. Let's face it, there is only a story of one in great great's day.

Now, if you were to explain to the individual that actually you may have a 1/100 chance any given year of being wiped out like Banda Aceh, they would probably take a different view of the risk posed by tsunami.

So, what is wackier, someone who thinks the earth is a living entity, or someone expounding on why 'God' decided to knock off a bunch of his followers? Will the New York Times be doing a story on this wacky theory?
