The Heinz Endowments is giving $400,000, and the Washington, D.C.-based Heinz Family Philanthropies, $50,000. The Heinz money will go to the Brother's Brother Foundation, a local international relief group.

In a prepared statement, Teresa Heinz Kerry, chairwoman of the Howard Heinz Endowment and the Heinz Family Philanthropies, said, "Obviously, our philanthropic focus is here in America and in Pittsburgh, but the astronomical proportions of this disaster demand that we act."

Leading the local relief effort is the Richard King Mellon Foundation. It is giving $500,000 to Direct Relief, a California nonprofit with nearly 60 years of experience working with refugees and disaster-recovery efforts.
