FORT HOOD, Texas (Reuters) - A lawyer for Charles Graner, accused ringleader in the Iraq prisoner abuse scandal, on Monday compared piling naked prisoners into pyramids to cheerleader shows and said leashing inmates was also acceptable prisoner control.

"Don't cheerleaders all over America form pyramids six to eight times a year. Is that torture?" Guy Womack, Graner's attorney, said in opening arguments to the 10-member U.S. military jury at the reservist sergeant's court-martial. (more in link)

This guy can't be seriously equating forcing prisoners into naked pyramids against their will with CHEERLEADERS? Can he. That's just sick and pathetic. I had to read it twice to make sure I read it right.

Later in the article when discussing the picture with the leash, he's quoted as saying "You're keeping control of them. A tether is a valid control to be used in corrections," he said. "In Texas we'd lasso them and drag them out of there." He compared the leash to parents who place tethers on their toddlers while walking in shopping malls."

A new low, certainly.

I mean, if that's the best my lawyer could come up with with, I'd simply dispense with the trial and take a bus straight to Leavenworth or wherever it is they go.

Surely we don't want to arrest and court-martial cheerleaders all across this land, now do we? Puppy dogs, kittens slurping milk, little boys and girls chasing butterfiles singing songs, Baseball, Apple Pie, Mom and Chevrolet. Is there anything more Charles Graner than that?

Just thought I'd try and guess his closing arguments...
