What nationality is "Coulter"?

It sounds like it could be French. Now wouldn't that be ironic.

Almost all of our presidents were of English and/or Prodistant Irish heritage. BTW, I loved that stupid ass land comment.

I think his father was Catholic. BTW was your dad Irish? I have no idea if Raegan is the correct spelling. But I read that Tip O'Neill accused Reagan of being out of touch with his Irish roots.

I've never seen documentation of why and when he decided to change it to Ray-gun. In Ireland, there is no Ray-gun. It's always Ree-gan. Very pretentious.

I read it in some magazine in my dentist's office some months ago so I can't provide a link, but that's what I remember. Her father is a lawyer who made his money busting unions. The whole family sounds pretty toxic to me.

The name Coulter as a surname predates its use as the name of a farm implement. I'm not sure how that came about. I always suspected that it was anglicised from the old Teutonic German word Kultir which which means knife blade. Most authorities agree that as a surname it derived from the Barony (now Parish) of Coulter and the Village of Coulter in that Parish located in Lanarkshire, Scotland. The earliest Coulter I have found is Sir Richard de Cultyre in 1207. Coo Castle is an old hill fort that apparently belonged to King Ku (Coo,Cou,Cow,etc.,pronounced Coo as in too), King of Strathclyde about the 9th Century. In the ancient P-Celtic "tir" meant "lands of"; therefore, "Kutir" meant the lands of King Ku. Still in Coulter today the name is pronounced "Cooter", a long "o" with the "l" being silent. The Coulters spread out in southern Scotland and, of course, later to Northern Ireland. They also spread into Northern England. The Coulters were a Border family. Even the Kolters from Germany came from a Scottish soldier named Coulter who settled there during the 30 Years War. The name then became Germanized.

Still in Coulter, Scotland today the name is pronounced "Cooter", a long "o" with the "l" being silent.
