1. Yes and no.
In terms of death numbers, yes.

But--

It's not like the earth murdered them for some warped sense of payback, with forethought and everything. Human depravity is more frightening (though obviously not as powerful) than natural disasters.

7. Tragedy is tragedy. Trying to make more of it to score cheap political
points is tasteless and an insult to all who died and their loved ones.

5. My husband is a NYC fireman
and 9/11 is always close to my heart. No one planned the tsunami, which makes it different than 9/11. Having said that, it is a much larger human tragedy. How can it be otherwise??? 150,000 dead.

8. On 9/11, America got a black eye - it was painful, but we'll survive.
On 12/26 the people living on the Indian Ocean basin had one of their limbs amputated - it'll take several lifetimes for them recover.

9. Tragedy is fractal in nature...
It looks the same at any scale. In sheer magnitude, of course the tsunami is worse, just in the deaths alone it's like having a 911 magnitude attack every week for a year.

But in terms of the emotional cost, it reminds me of the flip side of the story of the girl throwing stranded starfish back in to the sea. When confronted by a stranger who said that there were thousands of starfish stranded on the sea, and that throwing a handful of them back couldn't possibly make a difference, she responded that it made a difference to those who got thrown back.

On this level, it is meaningless to try to compare them, they are both tragedies.

12. And if?
Do you propose, the victims should start to inspect the USA for Weapons of Tsunami Destruction and by the way, if they are just there anyway, liberate the USA?

Just a shy question from Germany,
Dirk
