Pentagon ban on filming coffins defied

A US National Guard unit has defied a Pentagon request that sought to stop television news crews filming six flag-draped soldiers' coffins arriving in Louisiana.

But the Louisiana National Guard allowed a CBS news crew on Wednesday to film the arrival of six soldiers' coffins at the Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base in Belle Chasse, near New Orleans, Louisiana.

Despite the Pentagon request, Lieutenant-Colonel Pete Schneider, a spokesman for the Louisiana National Guard told CBS: "What we thought was, we're going to do what the family asked us to do."

2. Saw it last night...
and it was very moving. Not letting the press cover these types of events santizes war--any war.

3. Normally, I'd agree. But CBS covered it last night.
Dan Rather did the broadcast. And yes, they showed the actual footage of the flag draped coffins, as well as had a very to-the-point member of the national guard there to explain why they were doing what they were doing. It's a relief, actually, since I feared that CBS would be cowering in the corner after the Bush' National Guard Duty thing.

4. We need service men like this...
Now, if only we could get a glimpse of the 100,000 dead Iraqi bodies. We are witnessing the beginning of the dissent that will eventually get us out of Iraq.

Bravo CBS and Rather! Ole Dan's headed out the door anyway, why should he care about dissing the Emporer?

6. CBS last night, Frontline the night before
Could the media be finding it's ball's?. It's high time they started showing things that they should have shown months ago. I've got to add the report that was shown of the attack on the american convoy monday evening, makes me wonder what they'll report on tonight.

It's too bad that this thread will sink like a stone, people should be concerned with this.

7. Me too, Greyfox
While just 2 days ago, on LBN, some DUers posted in response to the report of so many Louisiana soldiers being killed at once, something to the effect of, "boo hoo, it's time for red state voters to wake up and stop supporting the war and voting republican." And now this report on the courage of the LA Nat'l Guard. Take THAT, everyone who looks down on we red staters/blue voters.

8. I agree with the poster on another thread who said
it's interesting how, now that the election is over, a few more things are being reported. As if the media muzzle has been loosened in order to have some semblance of credibility.

10. I think the PROHIBITION
...only applies to Dover, but I am not sure. Anyone familiar with the wording of the directive, and what sort it is?

In any event, props to the good reservists of LA. The more you try to hide ANYTHING, to deny ANYTHING, the more people want to see it.
