Truth about Madonna cult

By John Sweeney And Alexa Baracaia, Evening Standard
13 January 2005
New details about life inside the sect favoured by Madonna and Guy Ritchie are revealed today. An undercover investigation into the controversial Kabbalah Centre movement found a series of questionable claims by its leaders.

A documentary, to be screened on BBC2 tonight said:
"Healing" spring water sold to followers for nearly £4 a bottle comes from a Canadian bottling plant.

One cancer sufferer was told Kabbalah water would help to cure his disease and was advised to buy a batch worth ?550. Cash raised by donors for the Asian tsunami victims is being spent on distributing Kabbalah Centre products in the devastated region.

A leading figure at the centre believes Jews killed in the Holocaust brought their downfall on themselves.

2. It's amazing to me...
...that in this day and age some people still don't recognize a cult when they see one. I really don't understand this--and people who still fall for Ponzi scams. These things are not new.

4. I've always said
No matter how crazy the message, someone in the world will believe in it.

6. A few years ago...
...I was approached at work by one of those Amway-type network marketing people. I didn't know that that was what it was until I started listening to the cassette tape the guy gave me. It was obvious from that point. The guy approached me and said something like, "You look like the type who likes to make money." I was like, "Uh, yeah, OK". He gives me this tape to listen to. I knew enough to know that whatever was on this tape was not going to change my life or make me rich but I was curious about what was on it. I listened to the first 5 minutes or so and it was nothing but some guy droning on and on about our changing economy, stagnant and sinking wages, increased cost of living, etc. I understood right away that this was supposed to instill enough fear in me to get me to contact the guy who'd given me the tape so that he could sign me up for whatever program was going to "save" me from this impending doom. I knew enough about this kind of thing to know that it would just involve me buying lots of cassettes, books, videos, etc. and also that I would probably end up approaching people saying, "You look like the type who likes to make money". Fuck that.

5. Study of the Kabbalah itself is not cult-ish
it's basically Gnostic Judaism.

However this new and trendy practice of "kabbalah" is messed up.

8. I suspect they're operating just like the Scientologists do
I've always believed that Tom Cruise and other celebrity Scientologists get one version of it, in order to attract more of the masses to the cult. I'll wager that Madonna & co. get the same treatment at the Kaballah cult centers.
