Protester's sign's legality up in air
Obscenity as political expression is protected, law expert says

By Joel Christopher
Wausau Daily Herald
jchristo@wdhprint.com

Wausau City Attorney Bill Nagle said he is willing to talk to First Amendment attorneys before pursuing a public obscenity citation against a war protester whose sign said "This war is Bushit."
The protester, 41-year-old Mike Wallschlaeger, was on the south side of the Marathon County courthouse on Friday afternoon with the sign when police received a complaint from someone who had driven by Wallschlaeger. After consulting with Nagle, they cited Wallschlaeger and seized his sign.

The charges have now been dropped.

Tomorrow's protest will be very cold but will be out there, with all this publicity we couldn't possibly call it off on account of we my possibly freeze our asses off.

1. "Bushit?" That's not profanity
I'm going to use the same sign when Bush comes to Germany. The Germans won't give a shit.

3. Thanks, Mike will enjoy hearing that
I'll post tonight about what happened, or didn't happen at today's protest.
It's freezing cold here today which means the nut jobs usually stay home.
We had pro-war (sick isn't it) people that would come out with their flags and signs when this war started but they are fair weather, short attention span people that disappeared with the onset of bad weather.

4. Yesterday's protest went well, although we nearly froze
We had many positive toots and waves. Very few republican salutes, we did have one "get a job".

One women stopped to berate us for having a sign that said bullshit because children shouldn't be exposed to that. - we don't have a sign that says bullshit. She went on to say that it was OK to be killing innocent Iraqis because that is the price of bringing peace to Iraq. You just can't talk to some people and this one had her head so far up her ass the only thing she could hear was Faux "news".

I'm glad that it was cold because it keeps the nuts, for the most part, in their cars. But it didn't have to be below zero, that was overkill.

The story struck a chord around the world. Scores of e-mails have arrived bearing comments from Australia, Norway, Switzerland and Canada, and many parts of the United States. With perhaps two exceptions, the comments have supported Wallschlaeger's right to protest using the language of his choice.

Thanks to any DUer that took the time to write or e-mail.

When Managing Editor Joel Christopher called Wausau City Attorney Bill Nagle for a follow-up story, Nagle said, "I don't like this line of questioning. It sounds like you're trying to make this a First Amendment issue."
Nagle was absolutely right, of course. The attempted suppression of political speech is a First Amendment matter.

This part was just too funny and at the same time pathetic so I had to include it here
