Reading a Yahoo story about browser security tonight they mentioned MS's next upgrade to IE is codename: Longhorn. WTF??? Or am I reading too much in to this?

1. Other than both of them being pure manifestations of evil?

2. I have noticed...
...that MS doesn't seem a damn bit concerned with being called monopolists by the present administration or its law enforcement...

3. Longhorn is not the next upgrade to IE
Longhorn is the next version of Windows whose release date keeps slipping while Microsoft scrambles to throw away more of the new revolutionary features it promised. IE is actually a part of the Windows operating system and functions as a file browser and automatic spyware and virus uprade tool.

4. I think Longhorn is the new version operating system, not IE...
and these codenames usually follow a pattern. One of the MS development tools I use seems to employ the names of US Lakes as codenames. So I wouldn't worry about this too much.

The current version of Windows NT 5.1 (XP) is Whistler. Blackcomb was announced in 2000 as the successor to Whistler due sometime around 2010. Longhorn is an intermediate upgrade that is (now) due sometime in 2006. Longhorn is the name of a sports bar at the Whistler-Blackcomb ski resort in Whistler, BC.

On edit: Microsoft codenames

6. this administration's DOJ settled for peanuts with M$
David Boies (Al Gore's attorney in 2000 election) carried out a brilliant prosecution of Micr0s0ft under Janet Reno & Joel Klein.

Judge Jackson issued an order for he company to be split up.

When the new admin came in, the new DOJ poured water on Boies's work, basically settled the case as if the govt didn't have much of a case.

Not sure why, as far as I know M$ does make modest political contributions but it isn't one sided or proportionate to the net worth of the company and its representatives.

While the case was settled unsatisfactorily (atleast in my view), Boies's work paved the way for computer makers and resellers to start promoting the use of alternatives to M$ without suffering a backlash...

Since then entire countries, let alone individual organizations, have begun jumping ship.
