Is Big Brother Snooping on DU?

I decided to put the old firewall to the test as I logged onto DU today. Usually it just runs in the background, but I thought it would be interesting to see if any unrequested attempts came in to access the computer. Anyone care to interpret this? It's pretty freaking scary on first glance. I ran the browser in a small window so that I could watch the firewall results in real time.

Immediately, there were two attempts that were blocked. I looked up the source IP info on ARIN WHOIS.

The government, especially this government in particular, is into snooping on anyone and everyone it sees as even a remote threat. They film us at protests, they snoop through our emails, they rifle through our computers, all to know what we're thinking, and to gather anything increminating they can on us. Why? So that they can use it later in case we're deemed to be a threat. And this sort of activity has been going on for years and decades, it is merely the technology that has been changed.

The fact that it is the DOD doesn't suprise me, especially in light of the news that Rummy the Dummy is running his own intelligence group out of the Pentagon. That it is the 5th signals corp is also no suprise, since it is usually signals corp that deals with the gathering of electronically transmitted intelligence.

Frankly, I really don't give a rat's ass. What I say here is nothing that I wouldn't shout on the town square, so they can't blackmail or embarass me. And if they want to shut me up, well, to quote their glorious leader, "Bring it on". I have broken no laws, I pay my taxes. Absolute control of cyberspace is one of the stated goals of the Neo-Con think tanks. After I started researching election data, I suddenly found my access blocked to state election sites, election fraud sites, and anything with dot gov. I still am unable to visit NASA's site to view Huygens photos for crying out loud. Like poker, it's a "tell." They don't want the citizens to look too closely or learn too much. Their goals are in place. The next move is to ask for legal means to gain even greater invasion of privacy and freedom in all forms of electronic communication by pressing Congress on grounds of "National Security in the war on terrorism." Like the Patriot Act rationale, their National Cyberspace Security agenda, however, has more to do with control and spying on their own citizens than on any threat to the nation. It's a much larger game of domination without accountability.

I installed ZoneAlarm firewall a few years ago and got many, many such attempts, from DoD and dozens of foreign governments, including China, Germany, France, Australia, etc. I'm no expert, but my take is that it is likely automated data mining as part of the Total Information Awareness program. During the second Gulf war, the FATS on one of my hard-drives were destroyed (effectively destroying the drive and its contents) as were those of many of my associates. My phone calls to certain individuals were blocked from my home phone and two cell phones, although I could get through to them by calling from a pay phone. Also, e-mail to and from certain individuals was delayed by as much as several days. When they finally arrived, they would show up among the mail from whatever day it was initially sent. So, I had to keep looking back to see if something came in from, say last Thursday. Also, a web forum I was running from a server in Paris, France, got hacked and the posts erased.

Thing is, I'm a law-abiding citizen. But, I am working to set up an independent news service, and I'm a Quaker. Those are the only reasons I can think of that I got such attention. I'm using dial-up now and stopped using the ZoneAlarm (in addition to a physical firewall) on my RoadRunner hookup. All I'm saying is that you're not the only one. Most people I mention it to think I'm nuts, including my wife. --Cheers

How did you get those IP addresses and how did you find out where they are from?

alert you to such attempted intrusions, and you can run a trace. The trace service is free for a trial period, then you have to subscribe. The ZoneAlarm I was using even generated a cool map of the location of the source of the attempted intrusion, although supposedly attacks can originate in one location and be routed through the apparent source. I was reading a message board today where techies were talking about a hacker in China routing spam through a US Navy warship at sea. They seemed to think that any government surveillance would not be so easily recognized, and that intrusion attempts like we are discussing probably come from non-government hackers, or mis-addressed data packages, sort of like wrong-number phone calls. Go figure.

I would suspect that the ports being scanned are not from spies in the DOD, but from viruses. I mean these are the same folks who probably failed to connect the dots on 9/11 and concluded that Iraq would be a cake walk.


Most viruses once on an infected computer seek out other computers to infect. One way they might do this is searching for open ports on random IP addresses.

All it would take is for some civil servant to browse the web or open the wrong email message and bam... they become an infected host to all kinds of nasty programs. Trojans, worms and other programs often come with their own SMTP and port scanning engines built in ready to multiply.

Of course, if they are looking spies by port scanning people who post their opinions in plain text on a public message board, then the phrase "military intelligence" may still belong in the dictionary as the prime example in the definition of OXYMORON

I'm going to have to start checking into those attempts. I usually just block them.

I've gotten by by just constantly running anti-spyware apps...I need to get a firewall.

Logging onto DU, it blocked third party cookies from "Source DNS rachelhogan, pheonix," and one where the field was left blank. No blatant DoD stuff though...how do I get it to trace it?

it is more likely that the DoD (which is responsible for network infrastucture maintenance (think fault tolerance in case of war)and statistical analysis of the public and military internets :-) ) simply is using a packet groper to analyze what is to be seen. Our corporate network gets hundreds of these a day...you can view them as suspicious if you want...but hell, have some fun...let them through and use something like ethereal to see how harmless they are...

Under the patriot act, the intelligence services were given a lot more leeway to watch who they want, when they want. This would include the defence department and even the cia---which isn't supposed to operate in the US, but under the budhian regime is given alot more say in what goes on.

There have been some cases where new spyware has been installed on computers that AdAware and other spy blasting sofware cannot find.

It would not surprise me that the old boys at the FBI are trying to find out all they cann so they can assist the big shots in their qwest for domination.
