It's a sad day for the women of DU (re: Chris Heinz)>

Sorry, ladies:

Heinz-Kruger romance is slooow good

Last week's inauguration of President Bush was a bleak day for former opponent Sen. John Kerry and his family. But Kerry's stepson, Chris Heinz, is said to be finding some comfort in "Troy" actress Diane Kruger.

Last year, Heinz, 31, insisted that he and Kruger, 28, were just friends. After all, she was married to French actor Guillaume Canet.

But now we hear that the former model, who played Helen, the Spartan queen who ditched King Menelaus for roguish Paris of Troy, has extricated herself from her three-year marriage.

"It was an issue during the campaign," a friend tells us. "Chris and Diane had to keep it quiet. But now that the campaign is over, they're more comfortable going public."

3. He's clearly made a terrible mistake
Just because the girl is so beautiful she was cast as Helen of Troy does NOT make her the right choice for our Chris. She will have to prove her knowledge of current affairs, her wit, and her loathing of all things Bushian. Perhaps we can make her take a test and if she fails we won't let her have him.

6. I've dated a millionaire, but no billionaires - but that's not the point
Chris's appeal is not his money - it's his intelligence, his integrity, his wit, and his looks!

16. It's all that and
his money too. You have to admit, a good majority of rich men would not have the wives they have, if they were not rich. Donald Trump, recently married to a drop dead gorgeous woman, if he were poor, she would not have given him the time of day.

Chris Heinz, he is incredibly handsome, but if he were not the heir of multi billion dollar fortune, the step son of a presidential candidate, would he be in the eye of this woman?

I don't think so.....sad to say, it is the money too. ;)

29. Females are driven towards leaders.
I subscribe to the theory of evolutionary psychology, which states that there are inherent psychological differences between men and women.

If Chris Heinz was pumping gas he would not be as attractive to women - despite his personal qualities.

Women are attracted first to male status, just as men are attracted first to female beauty. Other qualities only matter after the primary criteria is met.

All of the single women sitting around in trendy cafe's/restaurants talking about all the good men being being "gay or married" never seem to notice that most of the waiters, busboys and delivery people are men -- who are usually good/hardworking, straight and single.

30. I married a nice guy!
He's a nice, working class, decent man who treats me beautifully. I didn't care at all about anything other than the fact that I never met a man who showed me more respect. Not all women are gold-diggers, though I guess a lot are.

Get treated like shit enough times by rich playboys, and you change your tune real fast. Luckily, my Dad taught me that a good man is one that treats you decently, has a good work ethic, and is a kind person, and that little else matters - plus he set a good example by treating my Mom well.

I think a lot of the women that you described have emotional problems, or low self esteem that drives them to forgo good men for "trophy husbands."

Who knows? If I were single, I'd date a waiter with a heart of gold over Donald Chump any day.

31. It has less to do with money
than with picking leaders, whether the leader is the US President or a gang leader or a revered street artist. Women aren't drawn to the money, per se - they're drawn to the man's status (the man's social level relative to other men). And money (among other things) in a modern society gives a man higher status.

By their example, what your parents taught you (as did mine) were monogamous values, which are not to be confused with religious values, though most religions do advocate monogamy.

A culture of monogamy (as in two people stay together for life and divorce is rare) is the only thing that can persuade high status males to pick one woman and stay with her, and the only thing that can persuade women to pick men of their own socio-economic class. Without real monogamy, we are essentially chimpanzees, where Trump-like behavior (serial monogamy/de facto polygyny) becomes the rule not the exception, where all the men battle each other as hard as they can to get to the top (so they can get as much sex as possible) and all the women become narcissistic and overly obsessed with their looks so they can attract the top man.

32. Eeeek. Sounds scary.
I'm glad neither me or my husband were raised to behave like chimps.
But I have to give credit where credit is due - I have witnessed many men who have no problem staying with one woman, despite having no moral objections to divorce, whereas a number of women I have met are stringing along multiple males, and making it perfectly clear that monogamy doesn't interest them. If I ever got the impression that my husband was staying faithful to me only due to "cultural restraints" and was struggling with monogamy and the desire to exhibit Trump like behavior, I'd cut him loose in a second.
Appreciate what you have, but don't do me any favors, see?

34. No - your husband (or most commited, monogamous men) is not struggling.
The best I've ever seen this explained is that each gender has two strategies for mating: low-committment and high-committment.

Men are said to be either "cads" (low-commitment) or "dads" (high-commitment). Women are said to be either "whores" (low-commitment) or "madonnas" (high-commitment).

Within a given population, the strategy one gender will choose will depend on the strategy of the other. In other words, a male culture of cads will encourage a female culture of whores, and vice versa. A female culture of madonnas will encourage a male culture of dads, and vice versa.

What monogamous cultural values do is to encourage one strategy over the other, to encourage the dad "switch" to be "activated" in men instead of the cad switch and the madonna switch to be activated in women instead of the whore switch.

Once a switch is activated to one position, there is little desire within the individual for it to be in the other. For example, once the dad switch is activated in a man, there is little desire to be a cad. The opposite is also true - once a man sees the cad strategy to be more beneficial genetically (because there are so many whores around), there is little desire to be a "dad". The same dynamic exists in women.

So it's not so much that monogamous cultural rules work to "contain the beast"; it's more that they help to move a switch into the better position.
