How does placing your life in God's hands reconcile w/self-reliance?

How does placing your life in God's hands reconcile w/self-reliance?
They seem contradictory:

"I put myself in God's hands."

"I'm not lazy - I don't ask for handouts from the government."

Seemingly if you are following #2 above, you are not really placing your future in God's hands.

and accept the fate that God has in store for me.

Why do folks assume "handouts" are part of the conversation ?
