Poll question: America's most forgotten war:
Edited on Sat Jan-29-05 12:34 PM by BullGooseLoony
I'm watching the History Channel, and they have labeled one of nation's wars as "The Forgotten War." I happen to disagree with their choice, though (which I won't inform you of, although I suppose you could always just look for yourself).

Anyway, what do you think of as America's Forgotten War?

2. The Spanish-American War of 1898....
A U.S. battleship was sunk in Cuba. It seems the media blamed the Spanish for it and the gov't followed suit and declared war on Spain.

What does that remind you of?

29. Yeesh . . .
You are aware that Cuba was controlled by Spain back then? Cuba was a part of Spain (though, not a real part, but a territory/colony/whatever). Just curious.

30. Remember the Maine!
Edited on Sat Jan-29-05 03:39 PM by BrotherBuzz
"Yellow" Journalism, too.. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

'Remember the Maine'. 250 sailors perished aboard the 'Maine' when it blew up in Havana Harbor in Feb 1898. "Yellow" Journalism (developed by publishers Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst) whipped the public into a war feeding frenzy that culminated on a symbolic patrotic day, 12 April 98. The public was informed that 27 years before, to the day, Fort Sumter had been bombarded and the American Civil War began. The following was read in newspapers across the nation:

"How patriotic Americans would like to hear the cannon's reverberation on this 12th of April to avenge the slaughter of the boys in blue on board the Maine in Havana's harbor two months ago."

We soon went to war.

I've looked quite a bit in the paper and I rarely ever see anything mentioned and I hardly ever even hear the p(R)esident speak of it. I'd say since its ongoing as we poll and its forgotten now its safe to say it will be the most forgotten war in history.

14. That is unbelievable.
You know, it's funny- most people, when confronted with this, throw it in with the "conspiracy theory" stuff.

I think it's just because they can't get their minds around it.

22. I can. Follow the banking system. Read "Rule By Secrecy... link
Good reading, if you can tolerate "conspiracy theories". </sarcasm>
You are aware I hope that much of Germany's SS ended up in Amurka's SS. The third reich didn't lose, they just up and moved. MONEY is what has ruled history, our government, and the projection of our military power.

Make sure to read both the positive and negative reviews prior to digging in. I am sure the govt is capable of providing negative reviews for things that it deems "unacceptable". I am sure the wingnuts would rather Kerry and Mike Ruppert didn't testify before Congress regarding Iran/Contra. Now there was a perfect conspiracy, run by a perfectly innocent administration. </sarcasm>

First Sentence:
Secret societies not only exist, they have played an important role in national and international events right up to this day.

One of the premises of 'Rule by Secrecy' is that an accidental view of history, taught to everyone and accepted by most without having critically thought of the implications, is wrong. Marrs proposes a conspiratorial view of history (perfectly valid, by the way) to explain world history and our planet's present course. He weaves together a big picture, conspiratorial view of history by explaining the actions and structure of secret societies, past and present economic systems, past wars and past actions of key political figures, and other tidbits such as "Ancient Mysteries" (a revealing section at the end of the book).

Marrs makes a reasonable case that "a few people run everything". Uttering this type of phrase usually causes a person to be branded as paranoid or worse. Read this book - then see if you still agree that such a phrase is paranoid. Given our system of mass media, capitalistic socialism that hints at an ultimate goal of globalism, dynasties passed on from the robber barons with an interest in retaining power and wealth, and two dominant political parties in the United States that always seem to happen to produce candidates and Presidents from secret societies, the book tends to be more believable than one might suspect.

I particularly like the way Marrs ends 'Rule by Secrecy'. Even if the accidental view of history paradigm is the truth, he encourages the reader to be open minded and become more educated. No matter what conclusions you reach at the end of the book, the enormous effort and prodigious amount of research and work Marrs gave to the book makes it worth reading.

to the point that they needed their land seized, their buffalo slaughtered for fun and laughs (they never killed more than they needed for the winter) their women raped, their villages burned, their way of life scoffed at and ridiculed.

Jesus must be kicking some cowboy ass somewhere... hey, don't we have a cowboy (fake) in Texas somewhere who needs his ass kicked? Like they say, bow down before the one you serve, you're going to get what you deserve....

Who knows what band has the lyrics "I'm on the outside, I'm looking in, see your true colors, etc etc.... I need

Oh nevermind... I just googled "I'm on the outside, I'm looking in and got the lyrics for "Outside" by Staind. I must remember to thank whomever created the internet someday soon. :)

26. Well geez... I guess I coulda shared.... lyrics to Outside
STAIND LYRICS

"Outside"

And you
Bring me to my knees
Again
All the times
That I could beg you please
In vain
All the times
That I felt insecure
For you
And I leave
My burdens at the door

But I'm on the outside
I'm looking in
I can see through you
See your true colors
'Cause inside you're ugly
You're ugly like me
I can see through you
See to the real you

All the times
That I felt like this won't end
It's for you
And I taste
What I could never have
It was from you
All the times
That I've cried
My intentions
Full of pride
But I waste
More time than anyone

But I'm on the outside
And I'm looking in
I can see through you
See your true colors
'Cause inside you're ugly
You're ugly like me
I can see through you
See to the real you

All the times
That I've cried
All this wasted
It's all inside
And I feel
All this pain
Stuffed it down
It's back again
And I lie
Here in bed
All alone
I can't mend
But I feel
Tomorrow will be OK

But I'm on the outside
And I'm looking in
I can see through you
See your true colors
'Cause inside you're ugly
You're ugly like me
I can see through you
See to the real you

...of our little to-do with Mexico (1846-1848) which served as a dress rehearsal for the leadership of both sides of our later (1860-1865) intramural scrimmage...I occasionally hit small monuments dedicated exclusively to this war in New England villages which remind me of an extremely "forgotten" war...

27. Are you referring to the King Phillip wars
aka Metacomet? Massasoit's son....resisted the colonists late 1600's in New England. Yep, largely "forgotten", IMHO.

16. Phillipines - Moro Rebellion - Aguinaldo.
The prototype of all the VietNams to follow.

You have the feeling that the US Foreign Policy and Military Wonks
have not learned a thing since then, same old tactics and tricks even
though they long since ceased to work.

42. Someone Beat me to It...
No one knows ANYTHING about this. I was called a liar by my BIL, and was told it was just some more "made up liberal shit." He's was an officer in the military! He shut up when we googled.....

I majored in history in college, and wasn't even taught that there....

43. Yeah, that's where the meme about using pig-fat to defeat
muslims came from, among many other now familiar themes, like destroying
the village to save it.

21. Russia 1920, ... and the war on drugs
Frankly the war on drugs has the most casaualties and troops deployed
over the longest period of any war ever fought by the US. Its lasted
70+ years, has killed and incarcerated millions illegally, has sponsored
foreign wars in several nations where unknown numbers have died,
arguably to the millions and destabilizes today a good many nations.

If you want a more "war" war, there is teh american deployment of troops
to fight inside russia in 1920... completely forgotten. There is the
first invasion of korea in 1875 with a gunboat the koreans destroyed
near pyongyang killing all the marines on board.

But given you're watching a MSM station, surely it would mean the korean
war.

25. Iraq?
As things have gotten worse, the coverage seems to have gotten thinner and thinner.

This weekend it is all "good election" stories, yet many parts of the war easily and quickly become forgotten.

which was fought by the English against the Native Americans who were allied with the French. Other than that, I don't know much about it.
