Nurses Take On The $50 Million Man (Arnold)
Nurses Take On The $50 Million Man

By Jamie Court

Governor Schwarzenegger told the LA Times Saturday that he would raise about $50 million for his 2005 special election ballot initiative campaigns from national sources. Wall Street has the biggest interest in Schwarzenegger's plot to privatize public pension funds, so you can bet the investment bankers will kick in big to get corporate reformers at CALPERS off their backs and to get their hands on hundreds of millions of more dollars in 401k funds. The Governor has put a big for sale sign on the California ballot initiative process and is marketing himself across America as a celebrity salesman who can peddle snake oil simply by claiming those against him - a.k.a. non-Schwarzenegger donors - are the "special interests."

As Arnold goes national with hands out for money, California nurses - who the Gov labeled a "special interest" for criticizing his rollback of patient safety rules - are going national with a TV advertisement that tells America what Arnold really stands for and who he stands against. The advertisement - which can be watched at http://www.arnoldwatch.net - was created by "Outfoxed" director Robert Greenwald, who volunteered for the project. When A&E repeats its bio-pic "Run, Arnold, Run" Wednesday night, Americans will also see the 60 second Greenwald spot that separates the facts about Arnold from the fiction. The nurses ad will also air on CNN and other cable stations all week. We'll see how Arnold runs from that.

1. This man should be in jail doing time for sexual assault.
If there is a god, puleeze get him out of our government and our state if possible. Even his own country, Austria, took away his citizenship. Why are we stuck with him?

3. Austria took away his citizenship?
I thought he still had dual citizenship...
but a diplomat in Austria said in strong terms
that Austrians don't do state killings, like
Arnold signed off on a couple of weeks ago over
a death penalty case in CA.

12. Thanks...I feel bad for Calif. nurses!!
I'm a nurse in Texas <a state that doesn't give a rat's ass about nurses> and I have wished our state could start to recognize pt safety/nurse-pt ratio ever since Calif. made it's changes in staffing....instead we have HCA hospital administrators who make up a "staffing grid" that NEVER ever addresses patient ACUITY or if a nurse is capable of working the unit they pull her to <i.e "let's send this maternal-child nurse to the ICU step down floor">. Our area is flooded with HCA facilities so there is not much to pick from around here!

6. Hospitals and Drug companies were lumped together
and they are #5 on his list of contributors, accounting for 1.677 million and change.

Hospitals love to cut costs on the backs of nurses. Hospitals would rather budget for lawsuits stemming from problems from short staffing than they would a nurse's salary. Nurses are working 12 hour shifts, and 12 hours of forced overtime on top of their regular hours, because hospitals would rather overwork the nurses they have than hire more and pay their benefits. Nurses are the most underinsured population when it comes to health insurance, often being trapped in a company plan and forced to subsidize patients in other industries who have the same plan on better terms.

And they wonder why there's a shortage.

13. 12 hr shifts that turn into 14 hr shifts....
since you don't get to start charting til you hand over your patients to the next shift!! And then management bitches at the nurses who have to stay over to chart..HELLO..these nurses want to leave MORE than YOU want them to leave after 12 hours. You think the bean counters would get this..it would probably cost them the same of $$ to add a nurse to the work the shift as it does to have to pay a nurse or 2 who has to stay after and chart cuz he/she has NO time to do so DURING her shift. Their infamous staffing grid doesn't allow for "what ifs"..so if the census is low and they schedule nurses by the grid, and then we get slammed..OH WELL, they don't call anyone in to help, you just have to make do. We cringe when the census is low,it means they staffed for a low census and and we have empty beds so guess which floor the night time nursing supervisor will send ALL the new admissions??? It all comes down to how much $$$$ the facility can save!
