See "In Good Company"--it's one smart movie!
Edited on Thu Feb-03-05 08:38 PM by Gloria
I never go to the movies, but saw this today. What a surprise! The TV ads make it look like a stupid comedy, but this is NOT a stupid movie!

It's a very insightful look at corporations and how lives are affected by takeovers, etc. It works on so many levels. At one point, the Dennis Quaid character, the "old guy" asks "Teddy K" the takeover guru some questions about how all this "synergy" works and and Teddy K, played by Malcolm McDowell, talks about companies becoming the head of the world. The DQ characters says the difference is that democracy has a responsiblity to its citizens and that's the difference. The ironies in this film abound.

Frankly, in light of the assault on Social Security, this picture says it all. 50 year olds getting sacked, the young guy buying a Porsche and riding high, but ultimately getting sacked and reexamining what is important in life.

GO SEE THIS MOVIE, you will love it!!!

4. Agreed, this is a very good movie
Dennis Quaid is great, and Topher Grace is going to be a big star, he's a fine young actor (loved him in Traffic).

You're right, it had some on-point messages about big company takeovers. The Teddy K character was pretty funny, a Murdoch knockoff no doubt.

7. I was surprisingly delighted
For once a movie that tells it how it really is that is geared toward the masses. And not just geared toward those who want to be informed. Not that its a bad thing to want to be informed. But we need this sort of reality to be shown to those who would not have been interested unless it seemed like entertainment.

I work in the business field and I am reminded everyday how replaceable I am. Being oblivious to the reality of the goal of a corporation, can really set you back in life. You are not a name, you are a number. Without that reality, it will be hard to not take it personal and then you question what you want in life.

I completely related to the movie, especially since I am one year younger than one of the main characters and am pretty successful at what I do.

Everyone needs a little reality check. I'm sure it will relate with a lot of those that have been laid off last year - thanks to the current administration's inability to create more jobs and growth ability for small companies. And then the corporations wanted to make greater profit, so get more efficient software and lay off the employees (that's what they did at my company - I survived for now because they know they need me.). We joke at work that if corporations could have it their way, they would employ robots and we'll all be replaced. Thanks to * that may happen one day.

But the movie has a happier twist to the end (which is unlikely, but a nice thought). And it points out that those who are too greedy and don't earn their promotions in life, get burned. And those who do things in their career because they have a passion for it, have the ability to succeed. Though the twist is not realistic, the point of it is.
