HOLLYWOOD VS. AMERICA
Garofalo: Fingers with ink comparable to Nazi salute
Actress, liberal radio host calls Republican gesture 'disgusting'

Actress and liberal talk-radio host Janeane Garofalo is taking issue with congressional Republicans who dipped their fingers in ink for President Bush's State of the Union speech as a sign of solidarity with Iraqi voters, likening it to a Nazi salute.

Garofalo actually made the salute this morning as she provided post-speech commentary on MSNBC's "After Hours" program.

"The inked fingers was disgusting," said Garofalo, who is one of the hosts on the Air America radio network.

"The inked fingers and the position of them, which is gonna be a 'Daily Show' photo already, of them signaling in this manner , as if they have solidarity with the Iraqis who braved physical threats against their lives to vote as if somehow these inked-fingered Republicans have something to do with that."

11. You Know I Saw Janeane On Scarborough Last Night and.....
thought she did well in the presence of Scarborough, Ron Reagan, Pat Buchanan - but I think if she is ever going to be taken seriously she needs to clean up her act a bit. She is really an attractive lady. In fact I just watched a movie on cable called "Matchmaker" which she appeared in. She's really talented too. But on the program last night and other nights when I've seen her being interviewed by RWer *bots - she just doesn't present herself (clotheswise). I think the RWer's dismiss her as some 'hippy liberal' and don't respect her opinions because of her presentation. She is a great spokesperson for our cause - but please Janeane - clean up your act a bit - at least when you go on these programs to represent us. Dress for success - will you.

(Sorry if I'm coming across as a pompous ass - but I'm just trying to think like the other side might - and I'm trying to take away one of their negatives).

12. No, not pompous at all!
You're giving constructive critism. My wife said almost the same thing. Of course, my wife also said she needed to get her hair cut much shorter, keep her eyes looking more downward, and speak softer in order to entice the repukes. I think that's going too far.

13. To start...
...she could wash her hair. It always looks really dirty. She's very smart, and obviously quite beautiful, but no media savvy to speak of.

15. LMAO!!!
It IS true though. How one presents is important and this means physical appearance & demeanor.

My husband thinks I'm being snobby when I remark on such things, but the fact is, it does influence people's judgments of you and your creditability.

Appearing on TV with greasy hair and goodwill hippie like clothes is not going to do much for her.

14. that is who she is....
she is not going to change her appearance to look more "acceptable", just because you think it would add legitimacy to her democratic world views.

16. That's all fine and dandy, but...
This is simply the truth about our culture. If one's physical appearance resembles a drug addict hippie who shops at goodwill, they will not be taken that seriously by a great deal of people.

Right or wrong, that's how it works in our society.

19. What you say about her not changing is probably correct
But I dont understand that though. We are in the 2% game right now; ie, a fight to the death for the mealymouth 2% that decides national elections these days. Dressing like her, or insulting people unnecessarily like Ward Churchill did, definitely doesnt enhance our chances. Its these little things that the pugs use to distract voters in the heat of the battle, when concentration should be on issues, not an advocates style. In a perfect world, they dont count. But so many impressionable people base their opinions on such shallow, though fixable, details. And the 2%ers are probably a large chunk of them.
