Is homelessness on the rise?
Or is it just me?

Seems like in the past 6 months, people with 'Will work for food' signs are sprouting up all over San Diego. I don't remember seeing them like this since 1993. (Now what happened in 1993 that made them go away?)

3. What did the "authorities" do with them?
Besides taking away what little they had, I mean.

so sad what they feed us as news>>>fucking kobe's sex sex sex:grr:

my 14 year old son asked "why didn't she go to a shelter?"...i told him because she was afraid they would take her children away from her for being homeless and poor :( which is what they would do...being homeless is now considered a crime in NY anyway thanks to Rudy and Bloomburg

6. I was trying to find a link
but I don't have time right now. I heard they took away the children and put them in foster care. I haven't heard much details about the circumstances, such as whether the mother is mentally/emotionally able to take care of the kids, but can you imagine losing everything you have and then somebody taking your children away on top of it.

There also was a big story in USA Today last month about homelessness being on the rise and that the fastest growing segment were families (intact with two parents and kids) and women and children. We point at other governments and chastise them for the treatment of their own people, but how are we treating our own citizens?

5. Sad to say, my closest friend may be "out of her house" soon
Needless to say, if worst comes to worst, she will move in with us, but she takes care of her ailing brother and the family friend who was living with her son when he was killed in that car accident.. The old guy was so devastated by Jeff's death, that she took him in because she was afraid that he might kill himself..

Her asshole s/o ripped her off so badly and now she is going to lose her house..:(.. Love is blind, and sometimes it's downright larcenous:(

She has received the foreclosure papers, but none of us know how long she can actually stay there before they evict her.:9 It makes me so sad to see her so sad:(

18. I don't know where to go on this exactly
But I was reading an article sometime back about a guy who actually thought he could use foreclosure to his advantage somehow. The bank actually doesn't want the house empty during foreclosure or something. And somebody else floats through my mind who ended up in their house alot longer then they thought they would. If I were her, I might not consider leaving until the cops actually showed up. Making sure her special things were out of course. And, has she applied for HUD or any other sort of extensions or help? I sure hate to see anybody lose their home for whatever reason.

And if she has an older FHA loan, sometimes they can be assumed, no down, no credit check. Hint Hint.

Good luck to her!!!

7. Among the things that brought down Hoover during the depression
were the Hoovervilles or makeshift shelters constructed from trash scavangered from the city dumps in Washington, D.C. by the unemployed and homeless. The camps were a daily reminder of what was wrong with his administration. Maybe this is what should happen today before the election of 2004.

10. Hoovervilles hurt him...
Ordering the troops to disperse the 'Bonus Army' destroyed him.

Ever wonder how Douglas MacAurther held on to his job after the disaster in the Phillipines, the alienation of the Australians, and the negligance in his New Guinea campaign? Simple, he was the darling of the Republicans for scattering the 'rabble' of the Bonus Army: veterans who served in WW1 who wanted their retirement bonus early to get back on thier feet during the early days of the depression. His Chief of Staff, Eisenhower told him it was a mistake to turn US troops on US citizens, but he didn't listen...

8. It's definetely on the rise
Edited on Tue Sep-09-03 05:48 PM by HawkeyeX
Every time I get a ride to school, there's an increase on homeless people on every Denver corner along Speer Blvd (You Denverites know what I'm talking about)..

Those signs are hilarous though. One of my favorites: Ugly Redneck seeking Beer for Food. At least the homeless has a sense of humor, but the homelessness is getting worse. I've also seen increase on one, and my wife told me that there was a crazy lady that was trying to speak to her and nearly hit her (she's deaf and was driving, and doesn't like homeless people, but we do donate $$ and items to worthy causes)

9. Definitely
There are a LOT more homeless people around. Every time I get on the subway, at least 2 homeless people panhandle in the cars, without fail. You'd see them once in a while before, but I haven't seen the sheer number of people begging like this since the Reagan years. It's totally heartbreaking.

And that's not even counting the people sitting on the train that are about a paycheck away from walking through the cars with coffee cups themselves.

12. yes
Here in Delaware, it definitly is. What is unusual is that we have a very low unemployment rate, less than 4%, but we have rising homelessness amoung the working poor, many with two incomes (both low wage. The average cost of a 2 bedroom apartment here (private sector - unsubsidized is $700+ per month.

13. For every homeless person the tax rate should go up accordingly
We should not allow any AMerican go homeless. Let's build them a place to live and feed them until they can get back on their feet!

14. it's not your imagination
homelessness is on the rise. The fastest growing segment of the homeless population are working families. Affordable housing isn't being built in many places - and rental properties are sky high.

We have no shelter here. People live in campgrounds - sometimes year round. When it's -20 you can imagine the comfort. People live in their cars, or couch surf, stay with relatives, etc.

I'm on the BOD of a homeless coaltion in NH - and one of our members is the AFSC - who are doing a great bird dogging campaign on the presidential candidates - and trying to squeeze a housing/homeless question in.

That children (and 39% of the homeless are children) are homeless should be a source of outrage. This should be a source of national shame. Instead, the right has so successfully dominated how we frame OUR arguments and the language that we all use - many people continue to cling to the stereotype of the homeless person as a wino or someone with mental problems. Or perhaps just a lazy person looking for a handout. There is a collective societal anger and hostility toward homeless folks. It's absolutely reprehensible - and one of the things we're working hard on is trying to get the homeless to VOTE.

15. Bad And Getting Worse
A lot of those Missions were run by "Catholic Charities" and with the multi-million dollar abuse class-action lawsuits filed nationwide, the homeless are becoming more visible: shelters sold or converted to programs that are eligible for federal funding, jobs lost among the working poor, funding directed to ShrubCo, etc.

I've been on that side of the street once before (2nd and 3rd Degree burns without Health Insurance); it's not a place you would want to visit IMHO.

16. Not only homelessness, but food lines are growing daily in every...
...metropolitan city. It all started when the truly needy were told they would have to work to qualify for welfare benefits. When the bottom dropped out after the Resident Squatter moved to DC in January 2001, the lines have grown daily all over the U. S.

Could your friend forestall the foreclosure by filing for bankruptcy? Perhaps some time could be bought, at least.

20. She already did that
and becuase he talked her into a second, and a refi on the first, and their combined housepayment is around $2200.00 a month.. Now she has finally thrown himn out, and there is no way she can afford that.. They have her paying that AND making up the missed payments.. She's only working about 30 hrs a week because business is so bad, and now that he's moving out, she will get very little help..

We would help her if we could, but other than offering her a place to stay if she has to leave, there's little we can do.. Her brother only gets SSI and the other older guy does pay her some rent, but add to that the utilities and all the rest, and she's drowning..

The thing that KILLS me, is that before she met him, she had about 40,000 in her IRA, she only owed 50,000.00 on a 175,000.00 house and her payments were under $550.00 a month PITI...and she had no debt at all..

After 5 yrs with him, she's got no IRA, they owe about 200,000 on a 175,000 house (a first a second..back payments), and she ended up having to declare BK last year..

I could brain her:( for hooking up with him, but he was a charming guy, who just happened to have a drinking/gambling problem..:( and now she's the big loser.. He will move on to someone else, and she's the one who really is going to pay dearly..:(

19. Laura Bush - Second Harvest Commercial
So I've never been one to blame family for the acts of another family member and have stayed off Laura's butt for that reason. Now, she's fair game.

I just saw her on a Second Harvest commercial a couple days ago. At the time, I was just annoyed. Now, I'm royally pissed. I live in a small town that has done okay because we always have an influx of new retirees. Sorry to say it, but old ones die and new ones come in. Don't flame me there. So I just clicked on your link and now I'm in tears. I haven't seen this crap since the 80's and because our food stamp program is worse then it was then, it's going to get real bad. The story about the Nat Guard vet, 30 years, injured, and his wife is in a food line! And little fucking Laura Bush has the goddamn gaul to tell people, who are already hurting because of her husband's stupidity, to help the other people who her stupid husband has hurt even worse. This will be the time of my life that I will remember as... no words. I am so digusted.

Better call my local food bank tomorrow, see what is happening here. Damn I am so pissed off.
