A Tale Of Two Septembers

A TALE OF TWO SEPTEMBERS
David Morris, AlterNet

We should acknowledge two linked anniversaries -- the 2001 World Trade Center attacks and the 1973 U.S. brokered, violent overthrow of the democratically-elected government in Chile.

1. I thought Allende's family was pressing charges on 9/11 and it was
overshadowed by the WTC attacks.

2. I hadn't heard that,

though I had heard the family had sued.
Certainly 9-11 is a date Chileans remember. This year will have been 30 years past.

3. Thanks for posting this!
An important reminder, for sure.

Having thwarted the possibility that Chile would become a model of democratic socialism, the United States made Chile a model of dictatorial capitalism. Under the hands-on guidance of University of Chicago economists, the Chilean economy was restructured. Unions were outlawed. Real wages plunged. Social spending was slashed. Of 507 public enterprises in l973 only l5 remained in government hands by l980. Chile privatized its social security system.

This "economic restructuring" is exactly what's in store for US, if the neocons/neoliberals get their way.

An interesting detail that I hadn't ever picked up on before is the reference to the University of Chicago. That's the home of the Straussian PNACers as well -- fascinating, methinks...

5. wow
that is something I didn't know.
Kind of gives me a sick feeling to hear PNAC mentioned in
that context.

Now onto the privatization of Iraq.
:-(

4. quote..
it is a great tragedy, a disaster that the lesson has had to be learned in blood, but every socialist must learn from it.
you have to split the armed forces. and you cannot do it with the insignia of power. the workers must seize power from the factories upwards. their is no other way..

7. What Happened Three Years Ago?
I know the terrorist attacks happened two years ago, but can't remember what happened in 2000 (besides a stolen election, but that was in December).
