The Gates artwork; Central Park, NY (pics)
A liberal and DAMN PROUD OF IT friend in NY took these photos today of Jeanne-Claude's and Christo's new artwork.

article;

The Gates, in Central Park, 26 years in the making, mile upon mile of billowing fabric, is the largest artwork since the Sphinx.

1. Beautiful.
I love the color, too. How long exactly is it? And why so long to make it happen?

3. Needed permission from sympathetic NYC administration.
Christo works on multiple projects simultaneously, so it's not like this has all he has been doing for 30 years. The concept and logistics were both tweaked over the years, as well.

2. Great pics!
A lot of people don't like the project, but being that it is temporary, I think it is pretty cool.

4. Cool. I like the Ukrainian Orange (Don't mess with my vote) color too!
That top one is now my desktop background.

6. A friend's instructor worked on the gates
She just returned and one of her comments was that the Gates forces New Yawkers to look at each other and actually interact.

I think that is one of the positive things about Christo's work: it FORCES the viewer to interact with the work... and in this case with each other. Another positive thing is that is is up for a limited period of time and then leaves no footprint, as it were.

I once encountered a "permanent" piece of Christo's work in Scotland. It was a wrapped shopping cart. I almost got thrown out of the museum because I was laughing so hard at the visual pun. Loved it.
