Why are American forces sick with pneumonia in Iraq? Cigaretts smoke ?
By Donna Miles
American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Sept. 10, 2003 – Cigarette smoking appears to be a contributing
factor in a spate of pneumonia cases in which 19 service members within the U.S. Central Command <http://www.uscentcom.mil> region contracted
severe cases of the disease. Two of them died.

Dr. William
Winkenwerder Jr. <http://www.ha.osd.mil/ha/winkenwerder-bio.cfm>, assistant secretary of defense for health affairs,
emphasized to reporters here Sept. 9 that "we do not have an epidemic," and
that pneumonia rates are no higher among service members deployed to the
theater than among other healthy people in the same age group.

2. Baloney!
It's likely all the particulate matter in the air from the bombing campaign, aggravated by wind and dust, along with being overworked, overstressed and underhydrated. Granted, lungs weakened by cigaratte smoking are probably more suseptible, but that alone wouldn't cause so many cases of pnemonia.

3. A few weeks ago, someone reported family news where a soldier
was on a certain clean-up job and died a few days later - I wonder if his statistic is included in the new smoker category.

If the trusting and loyal Bush lovers swallow this new smoker crap, we deserve to fall, fail, call it whatever yoiu want. The U.S. as we knew it might be salvageable.

5. I heard about a soldier
a while back, I think it was on Democracy Now, who got the same kind of pneumonia before ever being deployed to Iraq. The soldier was scheduled to be shipped out but wasn't due to pneumonia. The father of the soldier was speculating that it might have something to do with one of the inoculations given. I'm foggy on the whole thing now but it raised the question that maybe the pneumonia was caused by an innoculation.
