Why are scandals labeled "gates"
Can't we move on from that?

4. Cause we still haven't come up with something that tops
Watergate...yet. Although NakedFakeReporter may start a new standard since it involves not only the administration but the Fourth Estate as well.

7. Because Watergate is the biggest scandal in the public eye
I'm sure everything before that was Teapot Dome or something similar until Watergate came along.

Even though Iran-Contra was much more serious than Watergate, there were never any impeachment hearings and nobody went to jail cuz Bush Sr pardoned them all so we could "put this behind us" or whatever BS he said...

8. Gategate
naming everything "-gate" is a deep conspiracy/scandal. The scandal involving the exposure of this will be called Gategate-gate...

9. I propose we replace
the suffix "-gate" with "-bush" from now on as being synonymous with scandal.

13. As far as bush scandals go
If people want to make Watergate comparisons that is fine by me. I like the way that one turned out.

14. Lack of imagination
And every time one of these stupid scandals comes along I wish and pray the media would come up with a new term.

I loved "PropaGannon". Why can't that one take hold?

15. They're named that by a public/media that lacks imagination. . .
though I must admit, the latest name I saw -- Mandategayte -- had a certain amusing flair. But then, I love a good pun.

And yes, I certainly believe we need to move away from this practice. It cheapens the outrage and deflects attention from the actual scandal.

16. Right! We really do need to drop the "-gates" already!
Edited on Thu Feb-17-05 05:01 PM by mcscajun
I don't think there's one 'scandal' that's been tagged with "-gate" that's come to any resolution since Watergate.

Seems like that suffix is a preemptive kiss of death, IMHO.

17. It's called "backforming."
The same way as cheeseburger was backformed from hamburger.

And it's a quick, convenient way to get the idea across. Since the original "gate" was "Watergate," named for the Watergate Apartments, a totally Republican scandal, I have no objection to increasing the impression that Republicans can't be trusted with government.

18. Well... it's certainly handy.
It's a suffix you can add on to anything to instantly turn it into a scandal!

I can't think of anything else quite so compact -- "The Valerie Plame Scandal" is so wordy: "Plamegate" does it all.

I get that it's a cliche... but it happened for a reason.

19. Because of Watergate
Scandals after Watergate started getting that appellation in the press, and it has been that way since the Nixon was taken down. It is definately trite, but its meaning in unquestionable when "gate" is used. Anyway, blame the Press.

20. I don't like it....
Naming all scandals a "gate", no matter how small (or fabricated in some cases), takes away from the serious crimes committed in the Watergate scandal.
