"No One Was Injured And The Shoes Did Not Hit Mr. Perle

A Little Light Reading

This is too odd not to post, even though it's the sort of random thing we don't usually get into. The following is just in from the Portland Police Bureau, from the scene of this evening's debate between Howard Dean and Richard Perle.

At about 8:20 pm, Portland Police were called to the concert hall regarding a disturbance. Officers arrived and took custody of 52-year-old Bruce C. Charles of Portland. Officers contacted witnesses and learned that Charles was in the audience of tonight's debate between Howard Dean and Richard Pearl when he became upset, stood up, and threw his shoes at Mr. Pearl . Charles was apparently detained by either security or other citizens and held for police. No one was injured and the shoes did not hit Mr.Pearl .
So there's your Thursday night report from the "keeping Portland weird" department. We now return control over your evening to you."

Needed binocs to see him, but still.

10. Oh Gawd it was the same old shit.

911 was because of faulty intelligence.
The doctrine of preemption is still valid.
The Democrats are weak on defense.

The Iraqi people are free. We're spreading
democracy.

All of the same old lies after lies after lies.

I got yelled at for expressing my opinion. "Oh
you lying bastard." The couple got in my face
so I apologized, but the guy wouldn't let it go
and when I finally yelled "I apologized so SHUT UP"
he shut up.

14. The audience was pretty raucous during his opening
statement, so he kept droning on and on. I thought
my head was going to explode. But after that he
kept it short.

What was cool was during the Q&A Perle tried to throw
attack lines at Dean and the moderator slapped him down
and told him to cool it. That was sweet.

19. Oh, Dean gets it. He gets it.

He's read that book about "Don't think like an elephant."

He said over and over that we've got to stop letting the
Republicans frame the debate.

It was spine tingling. I'm telling you, the man understands
what he has to do and he's more than able to do it.

24. The other quote you should watch out for is the one
I talked about in the GDP thread when Perle was
talking about how dictators operate -- how they keep
their people scared and they need an external enemy
to hold onto power.

It was like he was revealing the plan for the Bush
dictatorship.

If these criminals could grasp the concept of irony,
it would have been delicious to make him choke on
it.

25. It pisses me off that TWO people ganged up to make you feel YOU
should apologize, when in reality it is PERLE who should be apologizing to the American people! Right before he is carted off to Leavenworth, that is.

I used to vote for republican presidential candidates. (Okay, so I was really stupid.) I also liked to see how many presidents I could see in person. (Not very many... saw about 4, before they started charging big bucks to see ANY president.) My small child and I went through metal detectors to see Poppy in 1992. (Never before had I been required to go to those lengths... see, the Bushes KNOW people hate them and want to assassinate them... not me though, I just want them to LEAVE.)

So Poppy did his spiel, and he got to where he said something about those darned lawyers who ruin everything (by having the nerve to sue on behalf of actual PEOPLE instead of on behalf of corporations only.)

I knew the sucker had been in business. (Saying Poppy was in business is like saying Hitler was a populist.) So I knew he'd been a party in plenty of litigation. So I found myself yelling out, "HOW MANY TIMES HAVE YOU SUED?"

Some really ugly people got on my case and got nasty. We traded some nasty insults. However, when they figured out that I was still actually going to VOTE for that piece of shit, they settled down.

26. I was out of line. I just let my feelings out.
And when he turned around his elbow was laying on
top of my knees and I told him to get his hands
off me.

When his wife turned around and said something,
I apologized to her. She turned right around and let
it be, but he kept yelling at me, and so that's when
I got in his face and told him to SHUT UP. He shut
up, so I got the better of it in the end.

34. Well, HE certainly owed YOU an apology.
And "mere words" (which were not even directed at him) do not justify an assault--and an unauthorized "touching" of your person, which is what he did, is an assault!

I'm glad he finally shut up, though!

What's the one thing you go someplace with that you could temporarily do without? Something bulky, that you could throw?

Your shoes, of course. Which is exactly what I suggest people start doing.

Let's force them to either ban shoes or make people wear special footwear. I wanna see some heels, too... three-inch spikes would be niiiiice.

Just aim wide with those, so you make your point without hurting anyone.

21. I was there..........
......and it was great fun. The audience roared its approval for Howard Dean with an extended standing ovation. Richard Perle came out and there was polite applause, a lot of booing and hollering of "Traitor!!" "Liar!!" From the balconies, the shoe incident looked like a huge fracas. The guy gave it his all -- hollering curses at Perle until finally dragged out.

Perle spent his time acting as if butter wouldn't melt in his mouth. Smoothly modulated voice, platitudes, trying to find "common ground" with Dean.

And Dean was disappointingly placid, I thought. I don't know how he'll do as DNC chair if he isn't going to raise a little hell.

He DID say, though, that one of his primary tasks is to refuse to let Republicans frame the debate as they usually do.

28. Found this wonderful quote from Dean at Kos. Wow! Go Howard.
SNIP..."The highlight of the night came in the phase of the debate when panelists were invited to ask questions. Perle had just spoken for a while, trashing the Dems on national security as usual. The panel then asked Dean an unrelated question. Before responding to that question, the Good Doctor said to Perle something like "Before I respond I want to say that Richard has attempted to do something that I'm not going to let him get away with, and that is frame the debate. As chairman I don't intend to let them continue to frame the debate." Be still my beating heart. You could almost hear Lutz sighing in dismay and Lakoff sighing in relief."

30. Dean Seeks Media Blackout, then quickly Changes Mind
Howard Dean, the new chairman of the Democratic National Committee, requested a media blackout of a debate with top Pentagon adviser Richard Perle, then quickly changed his mind Wednesday after news agencies complained.

"DNC Chair Howard Dean has declared a news blackout of his appearance and requested the media not quote, record, and/or paraphrase his remarks," event coordinator Gabrielle Williams wrote in an e-mail sent to news agencies Wednesday morning. "We apologize for the late notice, but we were just informed of this request."

Less than two hours later, Williams called to say: "We were told just a few minutes ago that it is now open" for media coverage. The decision to open Thursday's debate came roughly 30 minutes after an inquiry by The Associated Press.

Dean spokeswoman Laura Gross said Dean had decided the event would be closed before he was elected DNC chairman Saturday, but changed his mind because of his new job.

37. This shoe was thrown for all of us
We all know we want to see that shoe to hit Perle right in the face. We're all furious and feel powerless and we just want to somehow, in any way let these people know we SEE them and know what they are and what they do. That even though they control all of the press telling us that everyones happy with the death, poverty, destruction and misery, we KNOW it's a lie.

That shoe said we keep you and yours behind plexiglas shields and hidden in armored limousines, we keep you from speaking freely and unscripted to the press, that nothing you write on freerepublic is safe from reprint, no midnight visit to male prostitutes will go unnoticed, and you can't get away with sitting in front of an informed audience spouting bullshit. We're not going to let you enjoy what you stole.

That shoe said we know more than you think, and soon we will know everything.

That man's in jail for all of us.

Without a shoe thrown, no one would have paid any attention to this debate. Now the entire world has the impression the American people are violently opposed to Bush's policies, and do not support the war.

It was the best piece of public relations to counter Bush's control of the media to date. A man so angry, so incensed he couldn't restrain himself to that degree? A powerful, powerful image.

Except for that whole 'going to jail' part...

the entire rest of the world is beginning to believe the USA is the new Nazi Germany. And they believe that the American people wholeheartedly support the murder, maiming and torture of innocent women and children. This, in my opinion, has been the best and loudest indication to the outside world that the full support of the American people is an illusion.

While I'm not going to outright advocate committing a felony, his shoe is ON CAMERA when all of the hung banners and gallery protests during the congressional conformation of the electoral votes was NOT.

Writing letters to the editor is not going to stop the torture. I want to see that shoe video over and over. I want to see the snowball hit the limo, Ann Coulter chased with a pie, Bush reaching for his bodyguard because he's too scared to go anywhere without him. I want these monsters to appear vulnerable on film to undo all of the posturing imagery they push.

The shoe was great. It flying through the air just as Perle was giving his propaganda talking points couldn't have been better.

To the rest of the world, that man screaming "lies lies" while being dragged out was the only sane man in the room.

45. Here is a "mainstream" media (local) article:
http://www.katu.com/stories/75077.html

Protester Throws Shoe At Perle During Debate

PORTLAND, Ore. - Howard Dean, the newly minted leader of the Democratic Party, and top Pentagon adviser Richard Perle made clear their opposing views on the war in Iraq during a debate marred by a protester who tossed a shoe at Perle.

Perle had just started his comments Thursday when a protester threw a shoe at him before being dragged away, screaming, "Liar! Liar!"

Perle, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld's top policy adviser, was a key architect of the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, and Dean is among the war's most prominent opponents.

In his new role as chairman of the Democratic National Committee, Dean has stressed that Democrats are stronger than Republicans on defense.
