Geez. This list of aircraft carriers is interesting
I never knew that nations like Argentina, Brazil and Thailand had aircraft carriers. Yet China has none, nor do any middle eastern nations, even Israel, have any. Is seems to me, that middle eastern countries, as a general rule, don't have real strong navies. Oh, and get ready folks for the USS George H.W. Bush (I guess he gets a carrier even though he cut the military budget more than Bill Clinton, who increased it in his second term).

3. Yeah, but those countries just buy used ones...
which our state of the art behemoths of destructive power could eliminate with ease. :D

That being said, the day any vessel, short of a garbage scow, is named after GWB I will go crazy.

6. Speaking of aircraft carriers
anyone remember the al Queda statement a little after 9/11 when it was said the US would have to sell off all it's aircraft carriers to the oil nations in order to pay off it's enormous national debt?

Well the enormous debt part has come true, wonder when the rest will?

at all that he has done could be considered commendable it was the proposal to retroactively raise the death benefits for soldiers in the Iraq and future wars.

9. To get a good picture,
you have to look at the aircraft compliments, the nature of the battlegroup, etc.

If they are in "deep water", fought well and maneuvered carefully, only submarines (of "water-craft") have much of a chance against our carrier battlegroups (and I sure hope that ASW "defenses" are being maintained adequately).

However, these battlegroups are extremely expensive, and they have to be treated like irreplaceable gems. -- Because in practise they may turn out to be.

Some of these foreign carriers are more "prestige" pieces than any real threat to defended targets.

10. Not as it Seems
First of all, Argentina's carriers are decommissioned.

The United States is the only nation to ever have "Super Carriers". What Americans think of when they hear "carrier".

China is building, and if I am not mistake, Super Carriers. They are also building long-range bombers and new tanks comparable to the Abrams, and by that I mean they can hurt an Abrams, even if they aren't as good. We have a potential arms race on our hands.
