POPE: Gay marriage is "Ideology of EVIL", abortion compares to Holocaust
Edited on Tue Feb-22-05 09:38 PM by Bluebear
So the next time the Pope becomes ill and people cluck that folks are 'pissing on his grave' etc., please do keep this headline in mind. For someone who gave shelter to Cardinal Law who knowingly aided and abetted pedophiles for a few decades, this is rich stuff.

I apologize in advance to my Catholic DU friends. This is not a fight that progressives picked with the Pope. People can disagree about many things but using such inflammatory language is beyond what I would hope a peaceful religious leader would publish. Gay bashers and abortion clinic murderers can now extrapolate that they are fighting EVILLLLLL.

===

ROME (Reuters) - Homosexual marriages are part of "a new ideology of evil" that is insidiously threatening society, Pope John Paul says in a new book published Tuesday.

In "Memory and Identity," the Pope also calls abortion a "legal extermination" comparable to attempts to wipe out Jews and other groups in the 20th century....

In one section about the role of lawmakers, the Pope takes another swipe at gay marriages when he refers to "pressures" on the European Parliament to allow them. "It is legitimate and necessary to ask oneself if this is not perhaps part of a new ideology of evil, perhaps more insidious and hidden, which attempts to pit human rights against the family and against man," he writes....

"And this time we are talking about an extermination (abortion)which has been allowed by nothing less than democratically elected parliaments where one normally hears appeals for the civil progress of society and all humanity," he writes. In Germany, a leader of the country's Central Council of Jews called the comparison unacceptable.

6. well
as somebody else said, an elderly single man who wears a cape isn't really one to talk.

This is outrageous. He could've expressed disagreement with the idea of gay marriage without calling it "evil". That was over-the-top bigotry - it was hate-speech.

I just have to wonder at WHAT point will liberal Catholics say enough is enough and walk away? If you go to church, if you put money in the plate, you ARE endorsing this.

If your local Kiwanis club's president expressed this idea, you'd all quit in a second. But the Pope gets a pass on HIS hatred. It just boggles my mind.

Here's a secret: the Pope really doesn't decide whether you get into heaven or not!

10. It's convenient
that people defend the Pope as being "weak of body, but strong of mind" until he says something they disagree with. Then it's somebody else speaking.

Sorry, but from all accounts, the Pope is still actively running the church. There's no reason to believe these aren't his words and his ideas.

11. This CRAP will lead to more gay bashing in God's name.
OK. So, there's a gay scandal brewing in the White House, so Fat Johnny has to put his two scents in (his comments always stink) The next thing you know, the brainless hoards who finance his drivel world-wide by filling the offering baskets will go out this weekend and bash gays to make Papa happy. No one will be following Gannongate anymore because catholics are thinning the gay herd. The masses don't have Scott Peterson trials to follow, so this will take the attention off the REAL SCANDAL. This whole scenario is all so bizarre that it will probably happen.

Nowadays, when I need a dose of reality, I watch the SCIFI channel.

P.S. Sun Myung Moon is behind all of this.

Edited on Tue Feb-22-05 10:15 PM by alcuno
things about abortion, I'm disappointed in his statements about gay marriage. It is no threat to the Church because it will never happen in the Catholic Church, but he is feeding the hateful who would use this as a reason to ban any unions between gays and lesbians.

I'm assuming that he approved what is in this book, but I am also leery whenever I hear that the Holy Father has said something. I haven't heard him pronounce one thing in years that I could understand.

13. My favorite sentence
"pit human rights against the family and against man"

What race do "the family" and "man" come from? Obviously not the human race if we accept the Pope's logic. If men are human and humans make up families, then how can their rights be distinguished from those of human beings? So how do you pit human rights against the rights of human men and human families? What rights to "humans" have that are a threat to men and to families? This is so totally confusing!

Unless you substitute "women's rights" and then it all starts to make sense. Except it confers humanity upon women and relegates men and families to an extra-human sub-group. Or it relegates men and families to a god-like status and demotes women to mere humans.

A woman's right to choose and own her own uterus is obviously a threat to male supremacy. The Pope is just talking about male supremacy and the way that it is constructed through the "sanctity of marriage." Marriage as we know it confirms the name of the father. The social fabric is riddled with incentives for both men and women to validate themselves through this extremely flawed and ephemeral process. Unless you are a Catholic where even divorce is not recognized.

15. "pit human rights against the family and against man"
rephrased with the help of linguistic algebra:

pit human rights against traditional human organizing unit and humans.

cancel out 'human'

"pit rights against traditional organizing unit"

16. Sorry to offend our Catholic brethern
The Catholic Church (and most of its progeny) is the single biggest violator or human rights in the history of mankind. It is a self-absored, self-absolving totalitarian organization.

The Pope is not right in his head due to his illness but I do not doubt that he abors gays because he fails to appreciate their life circumstance. Maybe he is repressed but he has failed to reach out to gays, to understand their lives, their challenges and spouts the proverbial "love the sinner but hate the sin" line.

My hope is that when this man passes to his ultimate destiny, cooler heads will prevail but I'm not holding my breath. For God's sake what will a room full of beanie-wearing men agree to anyway? Whether Gannon is hot or not?

And all he learned from that is to continue to discriminate. How pathetic. The first ones that they came after were the gays.

19. I'm not worried about offending my Catholic bretheren
Not in the least. My Catholic bretheren need to demonstrate to me that they are not the tools of this kind of hatred. There comes a time when your religion is nothing more than a shell of what you think it is. That time has come for Catholics.

If anyone can demonstrate for me via the Sermon on the Mound or any other ACTUAL words of Jesus Christ (whose image the Catholic Church and Christianity allege to imitate) that this sort of hatred SHOULD BE being espoused, then have at it.

IF not then this man is nothing but a hateful hypocritical mother fucker whose death should hurry up and take him straight to the belly of hell before he does more harm.

It is under HIS LEADERSHIP that the Catholic church made children of their educational institutions sex slaves.

I would suggest the Pope take up Jesus' advice and yank the fucking LOG out of his own eye prior to demonizing me.

21. It's all about sex
I wonder why the Catholic hierarchy is so obsessed with sex.

Marriage equality, because of who is having sex with whom and no children can be born. But the couple can adopt if they want children. And children who wouldn't otherwise have a family will have parents. But that's EVIL! How dare anyone have sex when pregnancy cannot occur!

And ending a pregnancy, horrors! No matter why, it's EVIL! Never mind any mitigating circumstances and never mind that women are not the sum of their body parts.

I went to a Catholic HS and my entire family is Catholic. Most are pro-choice and I haven't asked them about marriage equality.

The things that were taught in my HS about anything relating to sex was that if you're going to get married, you'd better have kids and lots of them. Married couples without children were selfish. If you're going to have sex, you'd better be married and there better be a chance of the female getting pregnant.

Nothing was ever said about post-menopausal women having sex.....

when it comes to Popes he's not so terrible.

Maybe it's the senility, or maybe it's just a warped religious fanatic zealoutry. I guess this should come as no surprise, given the way he and so many other Catholic preists have behaved regarding the sex abuse scandals.

It's one thing for him to disagree about gay marriages, but calling them evil is over the line. And comparing abortions to the holocaust makes you about as crazy as PETA people calling the treatment of chickens similar to the extermination of Jews...
