DU Homework Assignment on Saving Social Security!!! (CBO Report)
This is the link to the PDF file of the Congressional Budgeting Office Analysis of Bush's SS plan, basically debunking Private Account as being too costly, and ultimately being a benefit reduction.

If we even hope to have a fighting chance in winning this battle, then its not enough to just say "but the CBO report says Bush is wrong", its also important to read the actual document and arm yourself with knowledge when engaging your freeptard sparring partners.

Its 57 pgs long, I printed off my laser on "ink saver mode" with side pdf slides to every page. If you can print it front and back then I recommend that you do that too.

I plan on reading and understanding it, I hope you will too.

1. This presumes the freepers will...
... listen to you. They aren't the ones who will change their minds.

There's only one main issue to explain to the people whose minds can be changed--there is no crisis, no matter what ads pushing for it say. It just isn't true. All one need say to those willing to listen is that Social Security itself says that they're good until 2050 or so, and that the only way the plan can fail sooner than that is if the government defaults on its own debts to the plan.

That leaves open the door to explain, simply, about the nature of the debt over the last twenty years. When Bush says the deficit is $400 billion, that's only the amount let out to private firms or other world banks. $200 billion more is borrowed from the Social Security Trust Fund. That's a loan to the current year budget, not a gift. The key phrase should be, "The government is obligated by law to pay it back to your Social Security account when it's needed for you."

The only action needed in the foreseeable future is to re-index the SS cap for wage inflation from $90K to $125-130K. Someone inevitably will counter with, "but, that will hurt small businesses create jobs," as they've heard on the ads, one only needs say, "how many small businesses in town pay their employees $125,000 per year? Name one."

Gotta keep it simple.

Cheers.
