Email the White House NOW to stop the genocide in Darfur in the Sudan!
Edited on Wed Feb-23-05 06:38 PM by flpoljunkie
Having seen Hotel Rwanda, I am deeply concerned that we are currently permitting another genocide to take place today in Sudan. I call on you to lead our nation and the international community in taking strong and decisive action to stop the violence, provide sufficient humanitarian aid for those in camps, hold the perpetrators accountable, and establish conditions for the safe, voluntary, and dignified return of survivors to their homes.

In your inaugural address you said, "America's influence is not unlimited, but fortunately for the oppressed, America's influence is considerable, and we will use it confidently in freedom's cause... All who live in tyranny and hopelessness can know: the United States will not ignore your oppression, or excuse your oppressors."

We are counting on you to give life to these words.

Sincerely,

Link below provides this sample letter to send to the White House: http://www.whitehouse.gov

If you have not seen Hotel Rwanda, please make every attempt to do so. It is at once gripping, compelling and life affirming--a remarkable movie that can make a difference. I cannot believe it was not nominated for best picture.

4. You can't write to the media because...
Bush has control over what is said in the media. Look at Dan rathers, perfect example. If you don't have his permission to run something, you lose your job, so no, e-mailing the white house, congress or media does nobody any good.

People are dying in the Sudan and the world is again dragging their feet. Let's put their feet to the fire.

7. yes people are dying over there and...
yes we should do something about it, but he won't. Remember, this moron changed how much we donated to the tsunami relief only after he was criticized for his original "donation" that was actually a loan that had to be paid back. He's an idiot and will ignore whatever he chooses.

5. The savedarfur.org website recommends writing to the White House.
Do both, if you like. It certainly could not hurt. Here is a link to Senators' email addresses.

10. Yes, write your Congressmen, too. What can stop this genocide?
http://www.nytimes.com/2005/02/23/opinion/23kristof.html?hp

So what can stop this genocide? At one level the answer is technical: sanctions against Sudan, a no-fly zone, a freeze of Sudanese officials' assets, prosecution of the killers by the International Criminal Court, a team effort by African and Arab countries to pressure Sudan, and an international force of African troops with financing and logistical support from the West.

But that's the narrow answer. What will really stop this genocide is indignation. Senator Paul Simon, who died in 2003, said after the Rwandan genocide, "If every member of the House and Senate had received 100 letters from people back home saying we have to do something about Rwanda, when the crisis was first developing, then I think the response would have been different."

11. And 100 letters isn't that many, considering the membership here.

Thanks for posting that. It's good to know and remember.

BTW I recommended this thread earlier, so if one more person does (besides you; the original poster can't), it will appear on the Greatest page, where hopefully more will see it.
