How many more "happy" families of dead soldiers must we see
Edited on Thu Feb-24-05 12:31 AM by linazelle
...

This AM,Katie Couric airs spot on man who made videotapes before going to Iraq. Tapes were to only be viewed in event of his death. He left tapes for his kids up through their wedding day. His wife said he was happy to go and felt he was fighting for a good cause. He's dead and his family is happy but how many other families are grieving and remorseful? We'll never know.

It's criminal that the media shows these selective families when they choose to talk about the fatalities of the war. I watched about 5 minutes of a PBS program last night on the war in Liberia and the blood and gore were sickening--bodies laying in pools of blood all over the streets, bodies being buried in shallow graves, wheeled away on makeshift carts. If this what it's like in Liberia, it has to be ten times worse in Iraq. And yet it's romanticized and sanitized.

Disgusting.

1. Saw it on Countdown tonight. Thought it was disgusting.
Especially the part where he tells his family that HE thinks his sacrifice was worth it....meanwhile, he volunteered, and his family is left without a husband/father.
He was supposed to stationed in Ft. Benning GA. He had already been in Gulf War One. Made me wonder about his homelife, and his mental stability.

5. teaching young men that there is honor in death is way too close
to whacked out Islamic fundamentalism for my taste.

They whip these guys up, convince them they are "fighting for our freedom". They are the cannon fodder of a corrupt, greedy, pathological administration who DOESN'T GIVE ONE GOOD CRAP ABOUT ANY OF THEM.

I lost my father to Vietnam. There was nothing noble, good or heroic about losing the most important man in my life to yet another pointless war founded on another lie.

Like you, I don't get the "happy family" mindset. The practical celebration of martyrdom. I used to think they HAD to see it that way, to convince themselves that their loved one did not die for no reason at all. Then I realized just how much that plays into the big dead hero mythology and causes other promising young men and women to also lose their lives in the same stupid, pointless way.

We should learn something from history.

6. It really is disgusting

And of course nobody in the Bush administration has been to ONE funeral of a fallen solider or have a special day made for those who have died (like a one-time for all funeral service). We never see photos of funerals and things like that. It's disgusting. :puke: :puke:

Bush and his administration doesn't care at all about them. Just look at how they're treating at the VA hospitals. :grr: It makes my stomach sick. How any of them and their families and the people who support this can support it I'll never understand.

Also there is nothing different from the extereme Christians going on now and the extreme Muslims. I remember I was listening to someone (I can't remember who) and they were talking about how before the soliders go out to a battle they'd baptize them, pray, and listen to Christian music and just get all hyped up to go "kill the bad guys." They're so similiar it's scary.

8. My grandfather is about to lose his VA benefits, it will probably
shorten his life as a result.

"Support The Troops", my ass. More like "Support Unending War".

This gov't is killing our kids, as well as the kids in foreign countries who never did a damn thing to us. And making it sound like dying is the best thing you could ever accomplish in your very short life. Meanwhile, no one EVER sees the real cost of this LIE on the damn news. Nope, not very family friendly! Back to American Idol (how ironic a title is that?)!

Worst part is, we've been here before. Not so long ago.
Nobody remembers it, and the irony is exquisitely painful.

9. I've yet to meet a happy family of a dead soldier
and I've met quite a few families of dead and badly injured soldiers.

Where do they find these people?

One family I know of buried a head. That's it...a head. That was the biggest part of their child left.
