"Cafeteria Catholics"....choose not to discuss Gannongate (wonder why)
This is a perfect example of the "cafeteria catholics" in this country.

To them ethics and morals are required ALL THE TIME....only when it

suits a cause.

1. Is that what a cafeteria catholic is?
Wouldn't a cafeteria catholic more often than not be a liberal? My parents are catholic but they are pro-choice, pro-gay, and in favor of birth control, sex education, and stem cell research. I always think of people like them as cafeteria catholics since if you adopted the catholic churches teaching you would be conservative, no?

Don't ask me why they still belong to an organization that goes against almost every one of their core beliefs, but still I always think that they are the epitome of cafeteria catholics.

4. No, they act in accordance with their beliefs....
I don't question that my parents beliefs are liberal. It's just that the institution and organization that they belong to, are active in, and donate money to, actively works against those beliefs.

7. I'm not a Catholic, but I believe that it is referring
to the tendency to label liberal Catholics as cafeteria Catholics for picking and choosing which forms of immorality to get upset about, while ignoring the fact that conservative Catholics do exactly the same thing, just about different issues. It's a way of calling them out on doing the exact same things that they condemn others for.

Why would any good Catholic not be outraged by the Gannon affair?

6. where are "moral catholic leaders" speaking out on "planting reporters"
where are moral catholic leaders speaking out with the Pope when he says "No War in Iraq"

I can tell you as a Catholic ... the sermons did NOT go near what the Pope said on Iraq.

And now the RW is using the "holy president" as a propaganda tool for more war.

I'm sick of it.

8. Well sadly the reasons you cite are the reasons I am a cafeteria catholic
The leaders of the church got lazy and complacent and are out of touch with the flock. People aren't making a living wage to support their families, they have less time off and people go without healthcare but apparently none of that matters to the church. Once a long time ago the church walked hand in hand with the labor movement...but in a way it made sense...when they improved the lot of the flock it improved the amount of cash flow into the church coffers...

They rally against abortion yet the local churches didn't have rallies against a war that is killing people on both sides...

As for Shrub...he isn't a catholic and if anything the protestants and perhaps some catholics ( the evangelical variety) are putting him on a pedestal...

To be honest when the church finds itself deeply in the red, perhaps they will learn that their flock is leaving them because they have "divorced themselves from the reality" of our lives...to borrow a gannon quote...
