"Hey hey ho ho, Social Security has got to go!"
actual College Republican chant, at Rick Santorum's Town Hall event, as shown by CNN.

Someone on our side has got to use that in an ad, to show the actual republican agenda.

For example, how benefits are calculate, for example, is on the table; whether or not benefits rise based upon wage increases or price increases. There's a series of parts of the formula that are being considered. And when you couple that, those different cost drivers, affecting those — changing those with personal accounts, the idea is to get what has been promised more likely to be — or closer delivered to what has been promised. Does that make any sense to you? It's kind of muddled. Look, there's a series of things that cause the — like, for example, benefits are calculated based upon the increase of wages, as opposed to the increase of prices. Some have suggested that we calculate — the benefits will rise based upon inflation, as opposed to wage increases. There is a reform that would help solve the red if that were put into effect. In other words, how fast benefits grow, how fast the promised benefits grow, if those — if that growth is affected, it will help on the red." —George W. The College Republicans WERE representing what the GOP majority believes about SS. They just use weasel words to pretend they don't.

I will donate to WHATEVER group runs that in an ad. I hope Dean catches it and the DNC starts slamming back at these horrific, inhuman beings.

9. Work, consume, or die. That is their plan for the rest of us.
Don't these people have grandparents? I am blessed to have my mother's parents still with us and they can afford to be well cared for at home (well, my mother's home) due to my grandmother's very good pension from being a teacher and both of their Social Security checks. The republicans want to destroy decent pensions and Social Security and don't think the Medicaid that supports most people in nursing homes is not in their sights either. Once your economic utility has declined, the republicans want you dead.

This reminds me of that old movie: SOLENT GREEN--Edward G. Robinson, C. Heston.

Person's reached a certain age then were FORCED to go into the "Chamber" for termination while they showed beautiful scenes of nature/life and music (you could pick the scenery) as you "slipped away" into death.

(later in the movie, we discovered that the food/manna crap being served to the remainder of citizens were the bodies of the dead "PEEEOPPPLLLLLLEEEEE")

16. I"m sure many of you got this email from moveon.org...
Dear MoveOn member,

We couldn't believe our ears when we heard a group of Republicans chanting, "Hey, hey. Ho, ho. Social Security has got to go" on CNN last night. But that is what they did, outside Senator Rick Santorum's Social Security town hall meeting in Philadelphia.

In the meeting, Santorum, the leading supporter of privatization in the Senate, declared that "it is time for a Republican solution to Social Security." But the Republicans gathered outside were more clear about where that plan ultimately leads. For Bush's conservative base, privatization of Social Security is just the first step toward getting rid of the program entirely.

These chants provide a good hook to get letters to the editor printed in your local paper, and the timing couldn't be more perfect -- Members of Congress are home this week, and will be scanning their local editorial pages. Can you take 5 minutes to write a letter to the editor on the Republican social security scam? You can find your local paper, submit a letter online, and even check out video footage of the chants at:

30. Yes, but is that REALLY what we want? Let's be fair. Don't we, who
manage to work the system, want to be able to gloat when we are old and infirm? Shouldn't those of us who made it big in the system be able to look down on those low-wage fools? We who make gazillions spreading lies on FOX or selling useless crap to the masses should be able to shake our fingers at those who risked their lives patching highways or roofing or making sure the forms were mailed. We should be able to laugh at the fools who made sure that the rest of us had our latte just so, or kept our streets clean or sewers working. They made the wrong choice. If they chose to work in a job that did not pay for every user that benefited from their risk. FUCK THEM.
Isn't that what all we good christians want in the twighlight of our lives?

39. Or Disabled people from being homeless, and unable to afford medication.
The waiting time for most Disabled people to get on SSDI now is approximately 2 years! Can you imagine being sick, not able to work, and having to wait 2 or more years to begin receiving your LTD pay? And most Disabled people have to hire an attorney to GET those benefits. The general rule of thumb with SSDI is: Unless you are hospitalized, your claim will automatically be declined the first go-round; and without an attorney, you will most likely lose your first Appeal; and once you lose your first Appeal, your second and final Appeal will only be a "paper" review by a panel of people you'll never even see, and can't see you (or your actual condition).

It's appalling that something you pay into your whole life is NOT available to you when you get sick and need it. No wonder so many homeless people are wheelchair bound, or missing limbs. These are among those people who could not sustain a roof over their head while they waiting for SSDI to kick in...and fell through the cracks.

As a Democratic society, we NEED Social Security Disability so that geniunely Disabled people, who are unable to work, are provided with living expenses in the form of an SSDI check.

after you finally get the disability you have to be on it for 2 years before your medicare kicks in. Can you believe that? You get the SSA because of a disabilty which must be expected to last more than 12 months and/or result in death and you have to wait 2 years to get your medicare.

I didn't even want it. They INSISTED I had to take it. I'm what is endearingly called "very low income". I get medicaid and medicare both. I had to PAY for my medicare for six months...then the medicaid kicked in and repaid me.

However, God only knows what the next surprise with medical will be in the coming months!

Have you never heard of stay at home Moms who do not have their own retirement benefits, or working people who don't have pensions or IRAs, contrary to your claim that all spouses "most likely would have his or her own retirement benefits?"

What do you think of the idea of borrowing all that money, reducing benefits, increasing debt, raising taxes to pay interest which buys NOthing, all to enrich BushCo? What do you think of a person who sells people on this program with misleading claims and outright lies, turning the young against the middle-aged and elderly?

37. Dear GOPBacker,
SS is not, as you frame it, "a system that takes money from people to give to other people who happen to be lucky enough to survive until 65".

It is a system where people pay their due to society, each to their own ability, where that ability is in part the result of being a member of society. Kindof like taxes.
Also "surviving" until 65 isn't a matter of "luck" - in the industrialized world the average old age is some 75 to 80 years, though the US is trailing behind because of the disasters of medicare, environmental pollution and minimum wage.

But it's interesting nonetheless that republicans are now revealing what the SS thing is all about for them; in their mind SS is just anti selfish-capitalism, and crisis or no crisis "it has got to go".

If a group of Young Democrats chant "Pull out of Iraq now!" does that mean the Democratic party thinks that would be a good thing to do?

61. What if GOPAC says it?

GOPAC sets much of the agenda each year for the Republican Party. And they were on C-SPAN talking about privatization being the first step in the eventual elimination of social security.

I assume it is illegal to use C-SPAN coverage in political advertising. Because I have seen semi-private gatherings of Republicans broadcast on C-SPAN before in which they spoke in blunt terms they wouldn't want the American public to hear, e.g. "Americans are just too stupid to understand what we're talking about".

and he just has to go. There's no compromise or two-ways about it. He's worse than Bush. Let's send him home to Virginia where he belongs.
