My decision process to post in LBN or GENERAL
I just read for the first time an excellent post on LBN concerning CBS' investigation of the * AWOL memos - http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=102&topic_id=1262013&mesg_id=1262013&page=

Tried nominating it for GREATEST, but the 24 hour period had just expired. I scan LBN regularly, but this one slipped trough; I only found it by doing a search on HINCHEY. I generally keep up with older yet still developing stories in GENERAL.

IMHO, LBN works best when it is not used. This is difficult to explain. Perhaps a better way of saying this is LBN should only be used when the event is monumental in scope, and definately NOT when the story has "legs" (meaning it is a development within an ongoing event. Fewer posts make those that are truly "earth shaking" stand out.

By going through the checklist one is presented with when making a post AND asking "is this truly earth-shaking" (as opposed to "am I posting this just because I am the first to find a "hot" relase") AND "is this part of a larger story" will steer more posts away from LBN and into a more appropriate forum.

Post as you will, this is just my 2 cents.
