You know what sucks...
I talk to a buddy of mine today. It was the first time in over a year. He has spent two consecutive tours in Iraq and is home now. But I don't want to see him right now...

A few days after returning he recieved a call asking for him to fly back there...I can't take this anymore he is the second friend leaving in three weeks...I can't say goodbye to another...In total I have said goodbye to 15 of my friends as they packed up to head to base to fly over their, most of them have served at least two tours already...everyday day I read DU I see thread after thread about 'who are you supporting in 08'...'08 IS THREE FUCKING YEARS AWAY!!!

Please people I know that presidencial debates are way more interesting but can we please focus on '06. I want threads about who is running near you who needs help...where are the rallies for senators and congressmen in battling districts...WHERE ARE WE NEEDED NOW!?!?!?!

'08 is something we can tackle in '07 we need a democratic Congress NOW to bring my friends home.

I'm going to go help Timmy repack his shit in three days...and I don't want to go...cause I don't know if he'll be coming back.

1. You need to go
and help your friend. As much as you'll hate it, you DO NOT want to blow off a chance to say good bye. As a Canadian, I can only imagine the pain so many on this board are going through. But, my good wishes are with Timmy and I hope he returns safe and sound. Take pictures - a lot and often. If he has access to the internet, he will love the contact. Work to keep him sane and grounded. Communication is the best way. I realize I'm not making much sense, but the day to day contact for someone in a war zone is incredibly important. It gives them a dose of relief from the terror they're in.

That's rhetorical, btw.

5. Sounds like you need a good long cry. Cry young man - cry! You
are in very tough times. Very worrisome. Very painful. You have to be able to let out all your worries. Crying will also help you laugh at poignant things. Both will keep you sane. So get with the crying already. And then wipe your eyes and go give your buddy a big hug!

7. you youngsters are bush* CANNON FODDER.....

what shocks me is that

1. only 9 % of the 18-27 year olds VOTED...the rest just don't care...and NOW, they are being used for CANNON FODDER....

2. hardly any 18-27 year olds show up at PRO-PEACE marches...some show up, but not enough...there's just NO RAGE at all in the current CANNON FODDER population...

3. very few 18-27 year olds take any political action to change the current situation...although a few DUers made efforts, most young CANNON FODDER make little or no effort to contact their congress critters, to write letters to newspapers, to call in to talk radio shows, to help on election campaigns, to stop ROTC on college compasses, to DEMAND that military recruiters stay out of their high schools, to keep high school administrators from turning over all students' records to the military, to stop erosions of our Civil Rights, to work for EQUALITY, etc. etc.......

soooOOOOOOO....your whole generation has ADVERTISED that they want to be bush* CANNON FODDER....and that's what you got....

8. Why would you want DU to stop talking about any particular subject?
Both long-term and short-term strategizing are important.

I don't understand why you would insist that no one here speak about 2008 until 2007? I suppose the GOP might wish we'd follow that advice.

10. I was emotional...
I don't think that we should stop talking about '08, but it seems to be our main focus. The GOP wants us focusing on '08 so they can sweep in '06 right now it is more important that we regain control of Congress in '06 than if we will back a Clark/Hillary ticket in '08.

I am will be with Timmy for the next couple days because I know that it is important for both of us, but what is most important for him is that we get a Congress that isn't willing to send him and the rest of my friends into Iran and Syria. I just got an email from my friend Wes who left about a week and a half ago and is now standing on the Syrian border. I understand that immediate withdrawal from Iraq is probably no longer possible, but if we go into Iran or Syria I'm quitting my job to go sit outside the White House for a few months until the president talks to me.

11. Folks like him
need some sort of underground railroad.

At least 5500 people have deserted already. I would rather suffer the consequences of that act, then to have to kill more innocent people.

12. Not Timmy's style
He accepts his responsibilities. He signed a contract and has used the money for college which he feels obligates him to carry out his service. He feels that we the people elect the leaders and if the majority of the leaders vote for the war then that represents that the majority of the country ipso facto voted for the war. Despite the fact that he disagrees with it he feels he is carrying out the will of his country. He feels that when we vote we give our disenting opinion and when we speak we give our disenting opinion, but when we act we must act in accordance with the will of the majority whether it was what we wanted or not, so long as it doesn't infringe on the basic human rights of other Americans.
