U.S. Senator Urges Indecency Rules for Cable-TV Shows
Nanny-state here we come!!

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=10000103&sid=aL_8PFjOW0bE

U.S. Senate Commerce Committee Chairman Ted Stevens, whose panel oversees the communications industry, said cable-television programs should be subject to the same rules on indecency as over-the-air broadcasts.

The National Cable & Telecommunications Association, the main lobbying group for cable-TV companies such as Comcast Corp., believes that ``we don't have any authority to deal with cable on indecency,'' Stevens, an Alaska Republican, told reporters in Washington today. ``We'll take them on and let the courts decide.''

Efforts to subject cable to indecency fines may escalate friction between the government and the TV industry. On Feb. 16, the House of Representatives passed a bill to raise the maximum indecency fines against broadcasters to as much as $500,000 for each violation, from the current $32,500. A measure to raise fines to $325,000 has been introduced in the Senate.

``A five-year-old doesn't know if they're watching cable or over-the-air,'' Edward Fritts, president of the National Association of Broadcasters, said in an interview today. The NAB represents TV broadcasters and has advocated that cable should be subject to the same indecency rules.

1. So Fox and Faux News better get their checkbooks out.

I thought the GOP morals police where against total government control. I think we should give remote control classes to all the Party of Morals and Family Values lemmings.

3. They are opposed to government control,
at least for their own propaganda channels. But if it shows up on a channel with a differing opinion, watch out.

Typical republican values. Do as we tell you, not as we do!

2. I have a better idea
Instead of demanding that all broadcasts be suitable for five-year-olds, as Fritts seems to suggest, why don't we just start licensing people before they have kids? Those who believe that the sea of television should be their child's babysitter wouldn't be allowed to have kids. Those who have discovered the power of the off switch would.

I agree. What all are they going to watch on tv? If all the networks have to be suitable for five year olds I guess we can kiss goodbye soap operas, comedy's, and nighttime t.v. *sigh* I love my soaps so I guess now I should enjoy them eh? I guess we're going to watch cartoons and preaching all day huh?

9. Idiot Republicans may kill the goose...
Edited on Tue Mar-01-05 01:47 PM by Armstead
If the Republicans decide to go on a jihad against indecency in the corporate media, they may find that their "family values" collide with their Corporate teat.

The Big Media doesn't want to lose the revenues from indecency. The GOPdeologues may find that if they push them too hard, that corporate money and propaganda support may start to diminish.

Would be very ironic of the GOP starts killing the Goose that has been laying their golden eggs.

10. Don't all TV's have a "V-chip" in them now?
And shouldn't that be sufficient for parents to control what content their children have access to?

I don't like the implicit assumption that television content must be leveled off for 12 year olds.
