"Pro-family Christians" aim to end domestic partner tuition discounts
:eyes:

(AgapePress) - Eastern Michigan University is offering half-price tuition benefits to students involved in homosexual relationships with university employees. However, pro-family activists are calling EMU's domestic partner benefits policy not only controversial but unconstitutional as well.

Last year, Michigan voters added a marriage protection amendment to their state constitution. But despite the ban on homosexual marriage, Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti has decided to give special half-off tuition breaks to the homosexual domestic partners of university employees, provided the couple can legally prove they have been together for at least one year.

Local pastor and pro-family activist Dr. Levon Yuille of the Bible Church in Ypsilanti believes the EMU policy violates the state constitution. "Eastern Michigan's contention is that this is simply domestic partners who should have the rights of maritals," he notes. However, he says the school's policy contradicts the feeling of the majority of the citizens, recently expressed at the polls.

"The people of Michigan spoke overwhelmingly in this last election that, no, marriage is an exclusive domain of a man and a woman," Yuille asserts, "so we have already sent a letter to our attorney general to ask that this be looked into."....more

Gary Glenn, president of the American Family Association of Michigan, also sent a statement to Cox, denouncing the EMU domestic partner benefits policy. The Michigan pro-family leader asserted that the state's marriage amendment requires state university officials to recognize marriage as being only between one man and one woman.

10. One thing I don't get
is why do the same-sex marriage couple's have to prove they've been together more then a year and not the other people? That's just way unfair. *sigh* :argh:

14. Well gays are so promiscuous, you see
:eyes:

It's a conundrum, the fundies don't want you to have sex but then they don't want you to commit to someone.

GOOD good good catch, Freedom Angel. You can meet someone on a bar stool in Vegas, get hitched the same night and get your tuition discount the next day if you are straight.

4. Unfortunately, he'll win
The new Michigan law expressly forbids companies from providing same-sex partner benefits, even voluntarily. The Governor doesn't support it, but it was a voter initiative. She had to remove a lot of provisions from various state contracts and employee benefits because of this.

That ballot initiative passed with about 60% of the vote. I didn't vote for it, but considering Michigan is a blue state, it looks like plenty of democrats did vote for it.

11. Seriously? I didn't realize it FORBID same-sex partner benefits
talk about government infringing on free enterprise. Should business owners be able to extend benefits to anyone they want? And I thought the Oklahoma law was regressive--I don't think it included a stipulation like that. :grr:

15. So much for the GOP's claim that they want less gov't control over busines
businesses.

Yep - it *forbids* private companies from covering not just same-sex couples, but also hetero couples that live together but aren't married. I had a friend who had been living with his girlfriend and her two children for a while, and his work covered all of their insurance even though he wasn't related to them. This law makes that illegal.

5. this is utterly outrageous....
I'm getting awfully sick and tired of christians trying to impose their narrow morality on the rest of the world. The rest of us don't tell christians who they can live with and under what social arrangements, so I wish they'd extend us the same courtesy. I hear so many christians saying "we're not the RWers responsible for this," but the ones responsible are doing it in christian's names, so if the religious left really does give a damn about tolerance and acceptance of diversity, they should be trying to do something about this, even if only getting out an alternative message. How about an eastern Michigan christian group coming out in FAVOR of the university's domestic partnership policy, and adding their voices and resources to the fight against fundy bigotry?

6. Very good points. Especially this:
How about an eastern Michigan christian group coming out in FAVOR of the university's domestic partnership policy, and adding their voices and resources to the fight against fundy bigotry?

The silence of the Left on these issues is obscene.

8. YES THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE! EVERY ONE OF THEM.
Edited on Tue Mar-01-05 02:39 PM by ultraist
They voted FOR a homophobic, racist, sexist, oppressive party. It's NOT just the religious fringers who are putting these homophobic policies through, it's the REPUBLICAN PARTY and ALL OF THEIR SUPPORTERS. They are shameless and trying to shun responsibility on to a few fringers is BS.

As far as I'm concerned, ALL REPUKES have blood on their hands, they are supporting the spread of HATE and VIOLENCE.

16. Very confusing
They are "pro-family" Christians, but do not mind destroying families? I have always known, there is the family you are born into, and the family you make. How does their religion give them the right to determine who MY family is?!

of EMU, I would send a reply to the American Family Association of Michigan that would tell them in the most haughty and academic way possible to go f*ck themselves.
