Vermont secedes from Iraq
This is a red letter day for democracy. Vermonters vote in town meetings to bring their national guardsmen home.

1. Tell everyone you know about this. Yes, it is a debatable issue and
Edited on Wed Mar-02-05 10:13 AM by higher class
debate will be for the good of education and analysis. We went blindly into a war of retribution over a crime where we are not even sure who the criminals were. We (our admin) manuevered approvals to fight bin Laden and the Taliban who were said to support him. We aimed the gun at Afghanistan and shot Iraq.

We must examine our blind patriotism that called for blood instead of law, now resulting in death and incredible immune problems for decades to come.

Debate will be good. Tell everyone you know about the cities in Vermont where the citizens included this in their business meeting and then voted for it.

Someone is trying to destroy America and it is those of our own who confuse targets - from Afghanistan to SS to the environment to horrible debt or rights to theft and lies.

For once in a long time, I started DU by reading a thread of hope.

2. Where can this information be found?
"Vermont has one of the nation's highest per capita rates of Iraq casualties and National Guard deployment."

Is there some place where we can line up per-capita casualty rates with 'red-state/blue-state' propensities?

The above statement made me wonder if maybe the 'red states' might be suffering less, proportionately. A corollary to this is, in the 'red states' which populations are taking the hits? From another article I read, there is a disproportionate number of casualties among Hispanic immigrant soldiers from Texas. Would those casualties even impact on conciousness of WASP bush supporters? If a soldier from a distant barrio falls and no bushie hears it, did he make any noise?

22. Thanks. Guess I'll have to dig out my calculator and find some
population charts to answer my question. I'll bookmark it for later.

3. Your thread title is inapt
Edited on Wed Mar-02-05 10:38 AM by NewYorkerfromMass
as well as inept. Please change it so it makes a little more sense and accurately reflects what the vote was about.
How about: "Vermont secedes from Bush"?

14. Please don't be too pedantic.
What would you call it when they voted to break their troops home? Secede sounds good to me, and reverberates in our national consciousness.

I didn't get the impression that the issue was so much Bush, but having a lot of their kids getting shot up overseas, rather than being home doing their jobs. Many of them are cops and firemen, which leaves big holes in essential first responder services.

26. I liked the title as well. Our board of city & county supervisors
Edited on Wed Mar-02-05 04:46 PM by sfexpat2000
was ridiculed by the local paper for passing a resolution to bring the troops home. The editorial was "Bring the Supes Home". And, most of their readers' letters agreed with the Board. I'm going to mail them this OP. Thanks.

33. I have no problem with satire
it's just that your wording made it a bit of a stretch of logic.
The essence of the matter is not where our troops are, it's the 'why' and 'who' put them there.
Although, I will grant that your approach helps to fuel the rage of right wingers who resent the notion that it is American sacrifice for the benefit of 'Arabs'.

10. Indeed...
If we're going to be robbed of debate and discussion of such important issues at the national level we need to find a place to do it and town meetings are great places for that. IMHO

fight for extended periods in a futile attempt at empire building.

9. Very proud to be a Vermonter!
Unfortunately my town didn’t vote on this at our Town meeting, but 54 towns did. As of late Tuesday 38 of the towns approved the resolution in some form, 6 towns passed over it or voted it down, 1 town had a tie.

We may be a small state, but we are not afraid to stand up for our beliefs. It’s truly a great place to live, even if we are buried under 3 feet of snow.

Does the state have that power, or is this basically a symbolic (though very effective) gesture?

18. I would think YES
1. National Guard units are under the command of Governors.
2. National Guard units cannot be called to action without approval of the state's Governor OR a national mobilization.

19. From the article:
It is nonbinding and carries no formal weight other than that of the sentiments of the tens of thousands of Vermonters who voted on it Tuesday.

23. Can't wait!!!
I am a Massachusettes native who is relocating to Vermont this spring. The economy unfortunately has driven me from my home state as the cost of living grows out of control here. Having family that had relocated to Vermont previously and after several visits to the state I was inspired by the people there and how they view thier lives, thier communities, thier enviroment, and thier way of life. Everyone seems to be involved or engouraged to be involved in the world around them and to speak thier mind when they have something to say. They are given a voice and a place to speak it where it is more likely to be heard. Go Vermont!!!

so it does not make any difference. Those in power rule, those not in power obey.
