Challenge to Cnet- PROVE there's a *coming crackdown on blogging*
http://www.rexblog.com/2005/03/03#a6033

Reading the story, the "crackdown" is a hypothetical, possibility of maybe there being a chance perhaps that the FEC may try to place a value on the link bloggers make to a candidate's website and then perhaps maybe try to treat those links as an unfair contribution.

If the columnist or anyone at CNET or anyone who is going to be screaming about this today can produce one member of Congress who will go on record supporting any such measure, I will head to the streets along with anyone else who wants to protest this "coming crackdown."

Produce that member of Congress who will support "cracking down on bloggers."

Not a member of Congress who says the other Party wants to crack down on bloggers.

Not a member of Congress who says, "we need to look into this."

Not a member of Congress who says, "the other Party is abusing this."

But one member of Congress who says, "I've looked into this and I support specific regulation and a specific new law that will crack down on bloggers who link to a candidates website...."

If CNET can produce one member of Congress who will go on record saying they support specific regulations by the FEC that crack down on bloggers who link to a campaign website, then, and only then, will this be more than another faux controversy

1. I think it bypasses Congress
A judge or a commissioner or other official can take action with regulatory law or maybe just pure macho on their side and Congress REACTS. Reacts IF there is an outcry or special interest in this narrow crackdown based on campaign law.

Using laws and offices in place doesn't mean the Congress has to dirty its hands. Protesting after the fact is a defense that measures how much they can get away with the next time or really making new legislation. Bloggers can probably work around the restriction but will feel the shot across their bows along with every other government persecuted group in the nation.

Deep investigation of the power conduit, the single official who makes the hit should be presumed if not pre-emptive as I see is nearly the case this time. I mean deep and fully disclosed information about the individual and his(her) connections as they are relevant to abuse of office and power in concert with the GOP.

The Day They Shut Down the Internet
By Alfredo Lopez, People-Link

Things have changed. Today's progressive movements are much more "international" than ever before because the Internet makes international communications easy and quick. And easy and quick are keys elements to any organizing campaign.

Of course, this trend to "globalization" of our struggle matches the deepening globalization of capitalism and the folks who bring us capitalism are very well aware of that.

Losing the ability to communicate internationally would not only set our struggle back but it would greatly damage the potential the future holds.

We're in the middle of two powerful developments that are about to clash. On the one hand, the progressive movements in the developed countries have made major advances in our use of the Internet. While we can't underplay the power and success of the government's disinformation strategy, we can say objectively that, if you want to find the truth about some event, you can find it fairly easily on the Internet. And if you want to involve yourself in some campaign or organization, no matter where you are, you can do so through the Internet.

But this explosive broadening of the progressive internet is accompanied by a shrinking of power over the technology. Today, two or three major companies have control of most Internet communications and they aggressively design their "programs" to mirror a top to bottom mentality that excludes really effective use of the medium.

To make matters more disturbing, they have now "tested" their ability to shut the sytem down, have seen the near negligible reaction to the shut-down and are moving into our future with all that in mind.

4. from what you say here, it's not the bloggers who should really be
concerned, but all of us...if they're going by what sites we link to, that must mean they can tell where EVERYONE is going on the internet...we should probably be afraid...

5. However,
we are seeing a similar sort of effort to stifle dissent in the DU news with a legislative effort to curtail free speech of one state's university professors. You will only be able to toe the party line. USSR here we come if the republican, selfrighteous idealogues have their way.
