Why exactly are the FCA and Bible Clubs allowed in schools?
Edited on Thu Mar-03-05 07:48 PM by Stop_the_War
We're supposed to have separation of church and state. The FCA (fellowship of christian athletes) has many clubs around the country and many schools just have "bible clubs".

1. Because school districts are afraid of frivolous lawsuits.

3. Because school buildings are considered open to the public
for community events such as voting, community meetings and so on.

4. Not Endorsement
Because the school, by merely allowing use of the facilities (but not participating or requiring participation), is not endorsing the religious views of the club. This treatment is mandated by the "free exercise" clause, IIRC.

7. You got it right
No difference between the French Club and the Fundie Club as long as they comply with the minimal framework required by the district.

Schools today are afraid to make judgment calls, even in stupid situations. Zero Tolerance kind of thing. They just follow the rules. Teachers and administrators can't get sued individually for that and the district can not hang you out to dry. No risk, no pain, and often no justice.

5. Why is the Sierra Club allowed to hold meetings? . . .
Or the Kiwanis/Key Clubs? Or the Young Republicans and Young Democrats? Or the Chess Club? Because the buildings are public. Just because someone uses a room or rents an auditorium isn't de facto support of their purpose by the school -- provided all other similar groups and/or functions are treated the same.

The public university I attended had a number of churches that held their Sunday services on campus in a variety of venues. They paid for the use of the room and kept a cleaning/security deposit posted with the school (though all policed their own areas very well). The university generated a little revenue and the church's presence on Sunday made no impact on the Monday biology lecture so what did I have to complain about?

6. Freedom of speech
Seperation of Church and state does not give the state the right to squelch religous speech by individuals.
