I went to a play last night talked to my friend who grew up in Lebanon. Before anyone asks, he is a very liberal atheist.
So we naturally started talking about Lebanon and he is very excited about the events there. He said he called his parents the moment the news broke that the government had collapsed and they were so happy they nearly cried.
He's cautiously optimistic of course and recognizes that things could go South in a hurry. But he believes that there may actually be some unity there between the various religious groups. It just confirmed with me that this is something to be genuinely hopeful about.
It sucks that Bush's accidental (not to mention bumbling and CRIMINAL) involvement in Arab "democracy" is spoiling our enjoyment of positive developments there. I blame Bush.
